Christmas of 1971
It was currently Christmas Day and the Rosiers decided to host a ball.
Naturally, the Blacks and Auclairs were in invited, along with many other noble and pureblood families.
As Elvira entered the ball room with her family, a small house elf immediately stood up on a stool and took off their coats.
She kindly smiled at the elf before looking back around the room. It was a very large and grand ballroom. The wooden floors shined, as did the diamond chandelier in the center of the room. There was tables filled with different types of food, and a fountain of different drinks. But what caught Elvira's eye was all the young pureblood women in their extravagant ball gowns as they danced with young and handsome pureblood men.
Elvira couldn't help but wonder if that's what her future would look like in a few years. She frowned and shuddered at the thought.
"Ahh Teresa." Walburga said with a content smile.
Elvira's mother immediately broke out into a smile and embraced the women.
"Oh it's lovely to see you Walburga."
As Elvira's parents continued conversing with the Blacks, she shifted uncomfortably on her feet.
Finally, she broke out some courage to speak up and she cleared her throat.
"Mrs. Black, is Sirius here?" She asked timidly.
Walburga stared at her for a moment before smiling.
"Yes, he's over on the other side of the room. Sitting on a bench."
Elvira thanked the women and quickly made her way over to Sirius.
Sirius' once sullen expression turned into a happy one when he saw his best friend in front of him.
"El!" He exclaimed as he hugged her tightly.
Elvira laughed as she hugged him back.
The two pulled apart and sat back down on the stone bench.
"When'd you get here?" Sirius asked as he laced their fingers together.
"Not to long ago."
Sirius hummed in response as he continued watching the older kids dance.
"Don't you think it's weird?" Sirius then asked.
"What is?"
"How in a few years that could be us." He responded as he pointed to a women and man dancing.
Elvira smiled softly.
"Yeah, it is weird."
"Do you want to?" Sirius asked softly, almost as if it were a whisper.
"Want to what?"
"Get married, have kids."
Sirius hesitated for a moment before he said,
"Basically live out the life that they want us to."
Elvira looked down at the ground. She didn't even have to ask who they were. She knew he meant their parents, and that they had practically been planning out every aspect of their lives.
But that's the way things had always been, and Elvira had grown used to it and accepted it. Although when she met Sirius, everything changed.
She started to question if the life that her parents had planned out for her, was the life that she truly wanted. And deep down, buried in the depths of Elvira's heart, she knew, it was not.
"I don't know." Elvira lied.
She and Sirius locked eyes, and his grey ones bore into her. Almost as if he could see through the depths of her soul and her true desires.
"Your lying." Sirius responded.
Elvira gulped and broke away from the strong eye contact.
She continued staring hard at the ground, just hearing Sirius' breath as he sat next to her.
"What about you?" Elvira asked, breaking the silence.
"I don't want it. Any of it." Sirius answered fiercely.
Elvira finally looked up from the ground and locked eyes with Sirius once more.
"How can you be so sure?"
He shrugged and said,
"Just am."
Elvira scoffed at his reply.
"Sirius, we're only eleven."
"I'm actually twelve." Sirius said with a grin.
Elvira rolled her eyes playfully and tried to suppress a smile.
She nudged Sirius with her shoulder and once more asked,
"Sirius, h-how are you so sure that this is not what you want?"
He sighed.
"Because El, look at all this." He said gesturing to the ball.
"It looks pretty and extravagant now, but no one truly knows the secrets behind the jewels, the charming smiles, the nice clothes."
"It's all fake, always has been, and also... I'm not entirely sure that I have the same beliefs as all the people in this room."
Elvira frowned slightly.
"What do you mean?" Elvira asked, although she knew exactly what he meant.
Sirius sighed and ran a hand through his raven hair.
"I mean... I don't believe that we're superior. I don't believe that we should rid the population of muggleborns, halfbloods, half-breeds, and blood traitors."
"I just- I just think that we're all made equal."
"Oh." Was all Elvira managed to say.
Sirius put his head in his hands and swore under his breath.
"And that's not what you believe?" He asked, looking back up at the girl.
"I don't know what I believe." Elvira lied again.
"Yes, you do. You know exactly what you want and what you believe." Sirius spoke.
Elvira opened her mouth to say something, but Sirius cut her off.
"Look, forget about your parents and what they would say, or think. I'm asking you El, not them." He spoke fiercely.
"For once, please don't care about what they would think." Sirius said as he took Elvira's hands into his own.
Elvira drew in a shaky breath.
"I don't want it. Any of it."
"I don't want to get married, I don't want children, I don't want to be forced to agree with what my husband believes about muggleborns, half-breeds, and blood traitors. I-I don't want to be stuck in a life I don't wish to live." Elvira said as tears started forming in her eyes.
Sirius wiped them away and pulled her into his embrace.
Elvira sighed as she rested her head on his shoulder.
"Parents suck." Sirius said, causing Elvira to chuckle.
"At least we have each other." Elvira whispered.
Sirius smiled and said,
"Always."
