I allowed myself 5 minutes to sob and feel sorry for myself. Then I toughened up. I would be so ashamed and embarrassed is Amir would wake up and find me like this. I stole a glance at him before I quietly got up and left the room. I bounded silently up the stairs and into my room, closing the door behind me. I was fuming mad…at myself. I let myself cry. I let myself feel and be weak. I’m Agent, damn it! We don’t cry when times get tough! We man up and get out jobs done. I walked over to my vanity and looked in the mirror. The girl in the mirror had red and puffy eyes from crying. Her eyes were also big and wide. My reflection showed a broken, innocent girl. Without a warning, I punched the mirror. I watched as the broken girl broke even more.
“Seven years of bad luck my ass,” I muttered as I checked my hand out. It had already minor cuts from when I punched the glass earlier. Now, I added even more little cuts. I went to my bathroom and ran some cold water over it. As I was making sure that there was no glass in it, my phone rang. With my left hand, I grabbed the phone from my back pocket. I caught a glance at the time when I answered, not bothering to check the caller ID. It was going on 4:37AM. “Lily speaking,” I answered. I was used to late night/early morning calls.
“Lilian,” the voice spoke.
My heart stopped beating for a while as despair and disappointment filled my body. Also, a dash of hatred was added to mixture of feelings.
“Director,” I bit out as I shut the water off.
“I called to inform you that it was a mistake to suspend you and Agents Kingston and Green.”
Damn straight, I thought as I made my way back into my room. I hated how formal and cold he spoke to me. I knew my father well enough to realize that he wasn’t calling just to chat. “What do you need, Director?” I asked with a snarl.
There was a short pause, which I am guessing was my father being stunned by attitude. “Well, a mission has come up that I think you would execute perfectly.”
Knowing my father, this mission would double up as punishment too. I began to pace my room as I thought about what this mission could be. “Go on.” I commanded.
“It seems that Rowdy is having a little trouble with his current mission.”
“I refuse to help that monster of a man,” I rudely interrupted as I stopped my pacing.
“I’m not asking you to help him. Your mission is to make sure nothing happens to his daughter, Adeline.” My father spoke swiftly. I knew he was growing angry with me.
“Fuck that. I’d rather work with Rowdy than his pampered daughter.” I spat. I checked out my hand because it was throbbing just a bit. I should really stop punching glass.
“You don’t have a choice, Agent.” He hissed. “Adeline and I will be at your house around 10 to discuss this even more.” With a click, he was gone.
“Yeah, love you, too.” I said, throwing my phone on my bed. As I stormed to my door, I stopped by the vanity. When I looked into broken mirror, I noticed something. The scared, innocent girl grew up into a pissed off women seeking a fight. With a sinister look, I left my room.
