“I don’t know what to do, Mina.” I said, my arms wrapped around themselves, rocking gently back and forth.
“I think-” She began. “I think you should just calm down.”
“That’s hard to do.” I said, scoffing breathlessly.
“I know, I know- but you have to breathe, Ochako.” She reminded me. “Just breathe, that’s all you have to do.”
“I feel awful.” I said, looking down. “He was so hurt.”
“He will be okay.” She said. “He will. I know he will, he’s strong.”
“He might overdose.” I muttered. “It will be my fault-”
“Stop saying that.”
“No!” I shouted. “I can’t! It’s all that is going through my mind right now! I can’t even think!”
She looked at me, her brows furrowed and her lips parted, an expression of concern, but mostly shock, was painted on her face.
“I’m sorry.” She whispered.
I sighed.
“It’s all too stressful, Ash.” I said.
“Why?” She asked.
I laughed, bitterly, and ran my hand through my hair, messing my bangs up.
“Because I’ve ruined everything.”
She sighed and walked towards me, a glass of water in her hand, as she sat next to me, her hand on top of mine.
“I promise, Ochako.” She spoke.
I looked up at her.
“I promise you’ll be better.”
I felt a hot tear slip down my cheek, my eyes already so sore from all the previous crying. I let myself crumble, like an old building, as she handed the cold glass to me, condensation covering the exterior.
“Please, breathe.”
“You know-” I began, gripping the glass tightly, letting the bottom of the glass sit on my thigh, the coldness numbing me.
“I told Hitoshi Shinso before I told my own boyfriend.”
“Why did you tell him?” She asked. “You know he’s in love with Izuku, right?”
“What? No- that’s bullshit.”
“Well, it’s true. Ever since junior year-” She said, standing up, walking towards her bookshelf, scanning over the tall wall of paper bound by string. She looked over them all, seeming to be in search of a particular one.
“There it is- he signed my yearbook, and thanked me for not telling anyone.” She explained. “I thought he was joking until I saw this photo-”
She peeled the book open, flipping through the pages, her destination definitive as she pushed past the waxy pages.
“In the robotics team group photo, he sat next to him, and-” She turned the book towards me, showing me a crisp picture of us, me next to her, her next to Momo Yaoyorozu, and Hitoshi Shinso next to Izuku.
He looked at him, a fond look, not even bothering to look at the camera, just at him.
I saw it, plain as day, it was obvious to anyone, but Izuku. Izuku smiled, his eyes closed as he did so, throwing up two fingers, crossing the others down, holding a peace sign.
Hitoshi gazed at him, and it was like you could hear his heart beating as he looked.
“That’s bullshit.” I scoffed, finding it abundantly karma-induced. Of course.
