Newt watched as Thomas leant over and kissed Brenda on the cheek. The sound of her laughter floated over to him on the early breeze. He was sitting on the sand, water lapping at his ankles. Newt was happier than he could ever remember being, but something was missing. Although he knew the pain of the loss of so many of his friends would never leave him, Newt knew there was something else.
Newt was lonely.
It was the sort of loneliness that no one could suffice. Newt ate breakfast, lunch and dinner with Minho, Frypan and sometimes Thomas and Brenda, but it didn't help. Actually, watching Thomas and Brendaade it worse; they were so loved up now, and it made his heart ache.
