Newt woke up early, anxiety for the day ahead pulsing through his veins like a sickness, because today was Marley's trial.

Today, they'd decide what would happen to her.

Today, they'd decide, if any (And Newt knew this was false hope), her punishment.

It frightened him that he might have to say goodbye to her already; to wave her off and be expected to forget her, the feelings he had for her.

Which was hopeless - he'd never felt like this about anyone before, and now he did, he could tell it was here to stay. He just hoped she was.

Pulling on yesterdays faded and stained trousers, quietly, Newt got up and went outside. It was boiling, and the sun was extremely bright; Wishfully, Newt thought maybe it was the sun that had woken him...

But he wasn't that oblivious.

The many trees scattered across the island were swaying in the breeze, and although the sea was rougher than usual, it was still calm; the fishing boats would go out as normal, the village would wake up and work... Nothing would change - not for anyone but Marley, and Newt. It was actually a perfect day, he thought, as he collected some water from a nearby well. Whatever he did, though, he still couldn't relax. He was so tense he thought his veins might actually explode.

Was that even possible? He better hope not, he thought. What would happen if that happened? If he was like this, what was Marley feeling? Nah, she'd be calm as always. Why couldn't he be like her? No, he didn't want to be like her! he didn't want to like her, not in that way!

"Oh bloody hell,"

Newt said quietly.

He took a deep breath in and slowly exhaled. He knew to do this to relax, but he couldn't recall who'd taught him, or when, and where. He sighed, took a big gulp of the fresh water he'd just collected.

Then he turned around and made his way to the meeting hut.
