They lived on a sort of island. It was large, but Newt guessed they'd explored all of it by now. The people who lived there, all immune, were spread out all over the place... But he knew one place he could be alone.
Like in the Maze, Newt was second in charge of running things. Minho was first; he didn't let his feelings get in the way of what was right. That was Newt's problem - he cared too much. Minho just got on with it.
Slowly, Newt wandered towards the forest, and seeking the privacy his life had always lacked, sat down beside a huge fern. The afternoon sun was hot, and it reminded Newt of when they first escaped the maze, how hot the sun flares had made the earth.
He coughed, quickly wiping his sleeve across his eyes. The memories were still as clear as ice, and the pain still overwhelmed Newt.
Angry, he kicked at a stone on the floor. This emotional crap so wasn't him. He started to walk back to the settlement, where there was a plume of smoke forming over it, from Frypan and the others roasting the food for lunch.
He was walking away, when suddenly there was a cough from behind a tree. Newt spun around, surprised. Had someone followed him there?
But the girl was not from the village.
