I was ready for initiation. I hated that you didn't even know what sector you were to be in until you were brought before them. I was in a small room with Abigale and Mark, waiting to be brought before my new group. Ace had said that you become pretty tight with the people in your sector. I wonder how quickly that process happens. I waited for many anxious minutes, and then Abigale shoved me toward the door, and whispered " Make Ace proud." She then winked and gave me a big smile. I opened the door, and to my surprise, there wasn't a large group of people standing on the other side. Maybe 30 at the most. 30 at the most. "There aren't many people in versatile, only about 20 or 30 people right now."
I counted heads. 24 people. And Ace obviously wasn't here, so he would've been the 25th. I was a Versatile, just as I had originally wanted. My brother walked onto the stage right after me. His eyes widened as he saw how few people were in front of us.
" Versatile?" He mouthed at me.
I nodded my head. His eyes lit up with excitement. Abigale had said to " Make Ace proud." I know for sure that we did. One of the masters motioned for us to sit down in the empty front row of seats in front of the stage. I jumped off the stage, and plopped down into a chair. Behind us the other Versatiles whispered excitedly. It was clear that they hadn't been to an initiation for a long time. The Versatile directly behind me, tapped me on the shoulder and gave me a thumbs up. I gave him a thumbs up too. The Master on stage cleared his throat and began to speak.
" We now welcome Nickole and Mark Fortis into the Versatile sector, to serve and protect the supernatural legion. "
He said some more stuff after that, but I was too excited to pay any attention. Finally I heard a word that caught my ear: Versatile General . That was what Ace was before he disappeared. I mentally reminded myself to not say " died." Ace isn't dead. Not yet.
" and now, " the Master continued " We have a very rare occurrence here. As you all may know, Ace, your former Versatile General has.."
I could tell he was about to say " passed " but I gave him a glare, and even though he was a Master, he saw it and quickly changed what he was about to say. ( Now that I think about it, it probably wasn't a smart idea to glare at a Master, but too late now right?)
" Gone missing in battle " he improvised " and so, as you all should expect, someone needs to replace his role. According to the tests, we have two very powerful Supernaturals in our presence as we speak. "
More whispering from our new sector
" So, myself and the other Masters have all agreed that it seems right for one so powerful and... Let's say inventive, to receive a role that fits them so well. We now grant the role of Versatile General to one of the highest test scorers in many years, Nickole Fortis" he beckoned for me to come up stage. I stood up, and then could hardly make my legs walk. I couldn't believe it. I know that Ace had said that we would rise quickly in the ranking system, but this quickly? Everyone else was just as shocked as I was. Then, the boy behind me who had given me a thumbs up stood up and started clapping. The others followed his lead. I walked stiffly up the stairs and onto the stage once more, still in shock. The Master handed me a shiny badge about as big as a silver dollar coin. I held it in my hand and stared at it, and then gave the Master a silent thanks. He flashed a small smile, and then nodded, gesturing I could go sit down once more. He then began to speak again.
" Now, as you all can see, our new General also has a brother, a twin one at that, who scored almost equally as well as his sibling. He also, has received a high rank. Mark, step forward."
My brother then stepped up onto the stage. The Master again started to speak
" Mark, you also have shown your true potential in your testing. You are to be Commander of the Versatile Defense. "
Mark was handed a badge also, in a different shape then mine, and he walked down back to his seat. The Versatile members all whispered again. Apparently Mark's ranking was pretty high up there too. With some closing words from the Master, the Initiation was over.
The friendly guy behind us tapped both our shoulders again. We turned around.
" Dude, you guys are like, boss! That's completely nuts that you were brought into a sector with high ranks! I'm Spencer, by the way. 16 years old, Commander of the Combatants. Ability of invisibility! So I'm like, the guy who does what Mark doesn't. Since he is Commander of the Defense. And, you, get to be the boss of everyone! Of course, you get help from everyone too, but you get the final word. If you're anything like Ace, you are going to be great at this job. "
" I have a question for you Spencer." I said quietly
" Yeah? Ask away General!" He replied energetically. Man, this kid was full of energy. No wonder he was Commander of the Combatants, it would take a lot to get him to tire.
" Well, first, just call me Nick, and second..." I paused, thinking about how I should word this. " Do you think that Ace is still out there?"
