"She already ate so she shouldn't be hungry, but I left some baby food on the counter just in case, and her high chair is out just in case, and can you put her to bed around 8? Oh and I left my number, Kevin's number, and his agent's number on the counter-" Danielle rambled while bouncing Alena on her hip. She wasn't going to let the child out of her hands until the last possible second.
"Just in case" I finished for her and Kevin chuckled.
"Sweetheart, Alena is going to be just fine. Ariana is going to take great care of her and you are going to enjoy your first night out in a long time without worrying about her constantly." Kevin gave her a gentle smile and slowly took Alena from her arms before handing her to me.
"I know, I'm sorry I'm just nervous. I know you'll be great with her! Thanks again." Danielle hugged me before interlacing her fingers with Kevin's as they headed out the door.
Their hands fit together like puzzle pieces - just like their personalities. I'd never seen a couple so happy and so head over heals for each other. Danielle moved across the country and took on a whole new crazy life to be with him and I knew he would give it all up in a heartbeat for his wife and daughter.
I picked up their little miracle and tried to push the jealousy out of my mind. I was so happy for Danielle, but a part of me was terrified that I would never find love like theirs.
"Alena come out come out wherever you are." I called an hour later. I was currently playing hide and seek with a one year old, which consisted of me closing my eyes and pretending not to see her sitting two feet away from me. She of course thought it was hilarious. I loved how easily entertained little kids were.
She let out a huge yawn that almost knocked her over.
"Hey sleepy head it looks like it's time for bed." I scooped the adorable little girl into my arms and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
She wrapped her tiny arms around my neck and gave me a slobbery kiss.
I tucked her into bed and started reading a Dr. Seuss book. I barely got to the part with the talking fish when I realized Alena was already asleep.
I quietly crept out of her room and tip toed down the stairs.
The nice thing about babysitting my friend's kid was that i didn't feel awkward or guilty about raiding their pantry and using their TV.
I popped myself a huge bowl of microwave popcorn and snuggled under a blanket on the couch before sifting through their movie collection. The best part about having rich and famous friends was that they had almost every movie known to man, and a few of them were autographed too.
I settled on Paranormal Activity 2. I hated scary movies, but had decided a few months ago that I was going to force myself to start watching them so i wouldn't publicly embarrass myself when i watched them with other people.
I was clutching the blanket around my head with my face buried in my popcorn so I wouldn't have to see everything popping out on the screen.
Suddenly I heard the back door creak open. My eyes darted to the clock. It was only 10 and Kevin and Danielle weren't supposed to be back until after 1. I grabbed the baby monitor and the fire poker. I crept slowly toward the kitchen with my back pressed against the wall.
I heard rustling in the kitchen and the sound of cupboards opening and closing. I never had to worry about burglars at my parents' average American house, but of course people would try to rob Kevin and Danielle's mansion.
My only thoughts were about protecting Alena.
As I got to the entrance of the kitchen, I flipped on the light and tackled the intruder from behind. The large and muscular burglar dropped to the ground, but quickly flipped me over and pinned my arms to the ground after grabbing my fire poker. I started to panic until I realized this guy looked oddly familiar.
