"Honey, we're leaving soon." My mom called from the kitchen.

I was going over to Dani's parents house for a cookout with all the families. I ran a brush through my hair before running down the stairs in my cropped jeans and white Converse.

"Ready!" I announced. We drove through town to their house and my parents parked on the edge of the driveway for a quick escape when the party ended much later. Our families were known for having late parties and the worst part was trying to navigate the parking lot that was usually created in their large driveway.

We walked up to the front door and were instantly greeted by Dani's parents.

"Dani and Kevin are out back." Dani's mom told me. I snuck away and made my way to the backyard, where they were sitting on the grass with Alena and Dani's sister.

"Hey!" Kevin smiled and waved when he saw me.

I sat down next to them and we all began talking and playing with Alena as the sun went down. By 7:30, most of Kevin's family was there and the fathers were huddled around the grill flipping burgers and dogs and more meat than most of us could imagine, let alone eat.

"I'm gonna put her to bed." Dani said, picking Alena up and carrying her inside. I followed her but walked into the dark living room to look at some of the pictures that Dani's parents had inside.

Dani and Kevin were so cute together, and it made my smile just to see the happy pictures.

I was laughing at a funny picture of Alena and Kevin when I heard the front door open. I turned around to see Nick walk in with the most beautiful girl I had ever seen.

She smiled at him and whispered something and he laughed out loud before putting a hand on her shoulder and walking her into the kitchen. Clearly they hadn't seen me.

I felt a pang of jealousy and quietly snuck out the front door for fresh air. I pulled out my phone and speed dialed Kyle from the front steps. I needed to hear my boyfriend's voice.

The phone rang a few times before an automated voice filled the line.

"Your call has been forwarded to an automatic messaging system." I hung up and frowned at the phone.

I walked around the back to the bonfire and took a seat. Everyone was inside filling up dinner plates and eating. So I had some time out here before the crowds descended.

"What are you doing?" Dani asked, walking toward me.

My head snapped around and I laughed.

"Jeez Dani! You scared the life out of me." I said, shaking my head.

"What are you doing out here? Everyone is inside." She laughed, sitting in the adirondack chair that was next to mine.
