A couple days later marked my five year anniversary with Kyle. Five years is pretty impressive for a couple that met in high school.
I hadn't received a text from him that day, and by mid afternoon I seriously began to wonder if he forgot. He had forgotten our third anniversary.
As I was thinking back to that awful day, my phone buzzed.
Hey baby I can't believe it has already been five years. It feels like just yesterday we were partners in Chem lab. Love you more than anything in this world. Can't wait to surprise you.
I smiled at his text and left my phone on my desk where I had been working on homework. I didn't want to get my hopes up, but I couldn't help but think about all of the romantic gestures that he could have planned.
I climbed into the shower while thoughts of dozens of roses, slideshows of our relationship, and other small sentimental things he could have in store.
Once I finished I wrapped myself in a towel and sat on the edge of my bed. I should be getting dressed, but I had no idea what to wear.
I sent him a text, begging him for a hint.
Just dress fancy.
I walked over to my closet and changed into a simple black dress and heels. I blow dryed my hair straight and curled the ends. I put on a little more make-up than I normally would and sprayed my favorite perfume on my wrists.
Finally, I heard Kyle beep outside.
"Five years and the man can't come to the door?" My dad mumbled as I ran by my parents who were sitting in the living room.
"I'll be home later!" I called, ignoring his comment.
"Hey there." I smiled, climbing into his truck.
"Hey beautiful." He grinned. He was wearing dark jeans and a white button down with Sperry Top-Sider's; I felt slightly overdressed next to him.
"So where are we going?" I asked.
"Oh no. Big surprise." He grinned as he pulled away from my house.
Eventually, we pulled up to a romantic restaurant in our town, which I knew was very expensive.
"Kyle, you did not have to do this." I smiled at him.
"Nothing but the best for my baby." He smiled.
We went into the restaurant and were led to a reserved table.
"This is too much." I shook my head as the waiter pulled out my chair.
"There's more." He said, taking a black box out of his pocket.
Inside was the most beautiful bracelet I have ever seen.
"Kyle." I whispered, putting it on.
"Glad you like it." He grinned.
We sat down and began to talk about the past five years. Most of the memories were from the first two years when we were in high school, and I began to wonder what was special about us these days. Was I only with Kyle because we had been together for so long?
He seemed very proud of himself for planning this surprise, but I found myself feeling disappointed in the date. For me, it wasn't about the money. I liked things that came from the heart and meant something special. I refused to give gifts if I didn't truly think the person would love it.
I also noticed that Kyle kept checking his phone throughout dinner, which was driving me slightly insane. What was more important on that phone than the girl sitting across from him?
