Elsa's POV

"Elsa! Get down here now!" A harsh voice shouted. I jumped to my feet. Even though the floor and my plain brown skirt were soaking wet, it was best never to keep my stepmother waiting. I threw open the bedroom door and rushed down the stairs and into the living room.

My stepmother was already standing there with my stepsisters. My stepmother was a woman with curly black hair and ruby colored lips, as well as very pale skin. She wore a gorgeous black gown, but in my opinion it just made her look more like the vulture she was.

Next to her were my four stepsisters; Ruby, Diamond, Sapphire, and Emerald. Stepmother named them all after precious stones, which is exactly how she treats them. Each one was born to a different husband, all who were incredibly rich and all who seemed to die mysteriously. It was a pattern with stepmother. Find a very rich man. Marry him. Stay together for one year. Him mysteriously disappear. Repeat. I think I'm the only one who sees the pattern.

I'm actually not part of the cycle. I had a real family, but then my parents died in a raid by bandits and my sister Anna and I were separated. I was adopted by my stepmother, Madame Jewl (pronounced Jewel), who works me like a slave and never lets me leave the house.

"Elsa, we're going to go to a party. The whole house better be mopped, and I want dinner ready by the time we get back. I'm in the mood for something rich... three berry pies, a roasted turkey, and a nice big plate of vegetables and potatoes." Madame Jewl said. I curtsied.

"Of course stepmother." I said. My stepsisters all laughed.

"Look at her, curtsying like royalty." Ruby laughed. She was the oldest. She had short spiky red hair, brown eyes, pale skin, and she wore a slim red dress.

"As if!" Emerald said with a smirk. She had short straight unnatural green hair, green eyes, pale skin, and a long flowing green dress. She was the youngest.

"Let's not be rude, she is a princess." Diamond said. She was the second oldest, and had long straight platinum blond hair like mine, blue eyes, pale skin, and wore an elegant white dress.

"Yeah! The princess of slaves and ugliness!" Sapphire laughed. She was the second youngest sister, and she had long curly unnaturally blue hair and blue eyes, as well as pale skin. She wore a blue dress as well.

"That's right girls. Now, we've got a party to catch." Madame Jewl said with a smile. She led my four sisters out the door, leaving me alone. I would never compare to my stepsisters. Their hair was perfectly done. My platinum blond hair was dirty and done in a plain braid. I wore a plain brown dress with patches. I looked closest to Diamond, but that only made her mad.

I pulled on my brown slippers and grabbed a small brown purse. I quickly ran out the door. The market wasn't that far.

The market itself was a bunch of vendors lining the street. Each booth displayed different items. Necklaces, shoes, fabrics, foods, pottery, anything you could think of. I made my way to the butcher and asked for a large turkey. Stepmother always wanted large amounts of food.

"That'll be twenty gold coins." The butcher said. I opened the purse and reached in, feeling for the coins. Nothing. I turned the purse inside out. It was empty.

My eyes filled with tears. What was I going to do? Stepmother would yell at me if I lost the money and didn't have food ready. It was probably some prank by one of my sisters. They had done something similar before. Even if I could run home, I had no idea where they hid the money. Or maybe they spent it.

"I'll pay for the lady." A kind voice said. I looked up.

The speaker was a man with tussled white hair and sparkling blue eyes. He wore a clean pair of pants and a clean shirt, and he pulled from his pocket a handful of coins, which he placed on the counter. The butcher took the money and handed over the turkey.

"Here you are miss." The man said, giving me the bag with the turkey in it.

"Thank you. I'm sorry you had to pay for that. I seem to have left my money back home. If you'll come back tomorrow, I can pay you back." I said. He held up a hand.

"It was nothing. Any man should help a girl in need. Do you need to buy anything else?" He asked. I looked at the ground and nodded.

"Lead the way. By the way, you never told me your name." He said. I started walking down the street, towards the farmers' booth.

"Elsa Snow." I said.

"Well Miss Snow, it is a pleasure and an honor to assist you." He said. We bought the berries, vegetables, potatoes, and pie ingredients, and then I turned to him.

"That's it. Thank you for everything." I said. He smiled.

"No problem." He said.

"I'll see you tomorrow so that I can pay you back." I reminded him.

"I'll be here, but don't worry about paying me back. It was my treat." He said. I started to walk away, and then turned around.

"You never told me your..." I started to say. But he was gone.

"...name." I finished quietly.
