Elsa's POV
I nervously looked around the ballroom. I had beaten stepmother and my stepsisters to the ball, but they could be here any minute. I needed to find Jack now.
Prince Jack, I reminded myself.
People stared at me as I walked by, scanning my surroundings. No one seemed to know who I was, and that suited me just fine.
I finally spotted Prince Jack at the far end of the room, surrounded by a swarm of girls. I hurried up to them.
"Jack." I said breathlessly. Jack looked at me, as did every other girl.
"Prince Jack, I mean." I corrected myself, adding a bow.
"Jack is fine Elsa. I didn't know if you were actually going to come. I'm so happy you decided to come though." Jack said. I saw the girls all shoot me jealous looks.
"Uh, can we talk?" I asked. Jack nodded and waved his hand and all of the other girls dispersed, grumbling the whole time.
"Now, what is it Elsa?" Jack asked.
"You have to believe me, it's not safe for us to see each other anymore." I said quickly and quietly.
"What are you talking about?" Jack asked.
"If we see each other any more, it will only end in pain. You have to trust me Jack. Please." I begged.
"No. I want a reason first. Why? What would happen?" Jack asked. I glanced around again. No sign of stepmother. Maybe I could explain. I couldn't say no to those pleading eyes.
"It has to do with the bruise and not being able to come to the ball, doesn't it?" Jack asked softly, gazing into my eyes. My heart stopped. Tears filled my eyes.
"Yes Jack. It's my family. They-" I started to explain, but I was suddenly cut off when someone joined our conversation uninvited. He was wearing the clothes of the Captain of the Guard, and he had bright red hair.
"I'm sorry to interrupt Prince Jack, but I... Oh, would this be Elsa Snow?" He asked with a smile. I closed my mouth.
"Ah, yes! Elsa, this is Hans, the Captain of the Guard and my best friend. Hans, this is Elsa Snow, the girl who captured my heart." Jack said with a wink and a smile. I didn't smile back.
"Ah, I thought so. It is a pleasure to meet you Elsa. I've heard so much about you." Hans said, taking my hand and kissing it. When Hans stood back up, his eyes met mine. My heart stopped for the second time. Those weren't kind eyes. Those weren't truthful eyes. His eyes had one clear message.
I'm going to kill you.
"And to you as well." I said quickly. Hans turned to Jack.
"There seems to be a problem with one of the guests. He refuses to speak to anyone other than you personally Prince Jack." Hans explained.
"Oh. Uh, I'm sorry Elsa, I have to take care of this. But don't go anywhere, I'll be right back." Jack promised. I huffed in frustration and then turned around, scanning the area again. It was a good thing I did. Stepmother and my stepsisters had just arrived.
"Oh no." I whispered. If they found me here...
I didn't even bother finishing the thought. It wouldn't be pretty. I quickly began walking towards the far exit, but someone grabbed my arm.
"There you are Elsa. Turns out he just was a mute. Everyone thought he wouldn't talk to anyone but me... sheesh, the intelligence level these days. What were you saying?" Jack asked.
"Jack, I'm sorry. I have to go." I said.
"But you were in the middle of telling me something important." Jack said.
"Stay away from me. Stay away from me and don't ever come back." I said. I turned to leave, but he held my arm tighter.
"Is it something about me? I can change Elsa. If your family doesn't think I'm worthy of you, I can prove to them I am. I can talk to them, introduce myself. Please give me another chance." Jack begged.
"Jack, it's not you..." I said.
"Then what is it?" He asked.
"I can't tell you." I said, pulling away again. He held tight.
"Elsa, you're the perfect girl. I love you. There is absolutely nothing wrong with you. If you're doing this because of you, then stop. I'll never be happy with any other girl." Jack said.
"Jack, please let me go..." I begged.
"And I can prove it right here and right now." He said. He grabbed my other arm and pulled me closer to him, and then kissed me. I closed my eyes, and I could hear gasps all around us. Then I heard a scream.
"MOTHER, IT'S HER!" I heard Diamond scream. I jerked away from Jack, and he let go of me. Tears were streaming down my face as I turned and ran for the exit. I threw open the doors and sprinted down the stairs, tripping and falling all of the way to the bottom. I pulled myself up, blinded by pain, and started running again. I heard Jack calling my name, but I didn't look back. I ran into the woods. Hopefully he wouldn't come looking for me there.
It wasn't until later that I realized that one of my shoes had fallen off when I had fallen down the stairs.
