Jack's POV
I climbed out of bed quickly. My legs were shaky, and I held onto the table to keep from falling to the ground. I still wasn't fully healed, no matter what I thought. And the smoke was only making things worse.
"Elsa. I have to get to Elsa." I chocked out. I staggered towards the door and pulled it open.
People were running in every direction. Some of them were helping patients, but most of them were running alone. I made my way through the mess of smoke and people to Elsa's room. It got hotter the closer I was to her room. That meant the fire was nearby.
I pushed the door open and fell to the ground. I pulled myself to my feet and looked around. The old woman who had been watching over Elsa was dead on the ground. She probably either had a heart attack or couldn't take the smoke. Elsa was still on the bed. Nothing had changed since the first day except that everything in the room was gray instead of white.
I walked over to Elsa until I was standing over her. Then I carefully picked her up and carried her as fast as I could out of the building. Everyone else was either passed out or gone at this point. I started panicking. Every way I turned, my way was blocked by debris and fire. I was already weak to begin with, and breathing in all of the smoke was making me light headed. I tripped on something and crashed to the ground, at least having enough sense to make sure Elsa wasn't beneath me.
I looked up. I would never be able to get us to the exit in time. It was impossible. We were both going to die here. I rolled onto my back and looked up at the roof. The ceiling was completely hidden by a thick blanket of smoke. I turned my head and looked at Elsa. She looked so helpless and frail. She couldn't save herself.
I had to save her. I was her only hope. I rolled back over and climbed to my knees. I brushed Elsa's cheek with my hand.
"I promise that I'll save you. I won't let you die. I didn't before, I'm not going to now, and I never will." I said. I picked her up again and pressed on through the smoke. Finally, I saw a doorway ahead of us. I pushed it open and stumbled out into the cool night air.
People were everywhere. Some had formed lines and were passing along buckets full of water, while others were helping people who had been injured. I walked a few more steps away from the burning building, and then fell to my knees. I had done it. I had saved Elsa.
"Told you." I mumbled to Elsa. She didn't respond. Not that I expected her to. But somehow, I felt like she was listening. I kissed her, and then passed out.
----
"You know, he really ought to stay out of trouble." A voice said.
"But he loves Elsa. What did you expect him to do?" A different voice asked.
"I don't know! All I know is that my husband told me he wouldn't risk anything for me." The first voice said. I groaned and opened my eyes. I was in a clean outfit, and I was in a cot in a building I didn't recognize. Two people were busy around me. One was a woman who looked like she was in her forties, while the other one was a woman who looked like she was in her thirties.
"He's awake." The younger woman said.
"Good. Tell him how much I hate him Cassidy." The older woman grumbled.
"Be careful Shiana, he is still the prince." The Cassidy warned.
"Where's Elsa?" I croaked.
"Elsa shmelda." Shiana said.
"Be respectful Shiana!" The Cassidy exclaimed.
"Why? What's the worse he'll do? Behead me? That would be a mercy!" Shiana said loudly.
"What happened to Elsa?" I asked again.
"She's dead." Shiana said. My heart stopped. No. Not after everything I had done for her. Please no!
"Stop it! He just woke up! Elsa's fine your highness. She's in much better condition than you are as a matter of fact." The Cassidy said with a smile. I calmed down. It was a joke. Elsa was fine. Thank goodness.
Suddenly the door opened and Elsa walked in. She was wearing a white nightgown, and her hair was done in a simple braid. She smiled when she saw me.
"I'm glad to see you're awake Prince Jack." She said.
"You're alive!" I said happily. Shiana and Cassidy glanced at each other.
"We'll leave you two alone." Cassidy said. She and Shiana both left the room. As soon as the door closed, Elsa pounced on me. She kissed me, and I kissed her back. After a few minutes, I pulled away.
"What happened? How did you get better?" I asked breathlessly.
"Well, Hans tracked me down into the forest. He told me he would spare you if I kissed him. Then instead of kissing me, he stabbed me. That's the last thing I remember before waking up here with a bunch of healers. They explained about you being injured, and the fire, and you rescuing me." Elsa explained.
"I'm so glad you're ok!" I declared, kissing her again. A couple of minutes later I pulled away again.
"What happened to Hans?" I asked.
"He vanished after the fire. No one has seen him or heard from him." Elsa said.
"Let's keep it that way. I'm going to send out an official kill-on-sight poster for him." I growled.
"Heal now, kill Hans later." Elsa said.
"I guess you're right. I'm not exactly in shape for dueling am I?" I asked sheepishly. Elsa smiled. I smiled and kissed her again. It was nice to be back with Elsa. And for once I didn't have to worry about a thing.
