Jack's POV

I looked at my reflection. I was dressed in commoner clothes, but I had also tried to look as nice as possible. I wanted to impress Elsa. But I was worried that she didn't care.

"If you're so worried, invite her to the ball." My best friend, Hans, suggested. He also happened to be the captain of the guard.

He was the only person I trusted enough to tell about Elsa. In the past, he had warned me about girls who I thought loved me back, but in reality only wanted something from me or were heartbreakers. Some he drove off, and some vanished on their own.

"She's a commoner. She may not like those kinds of things." I fretted.

"What kind of girl doesn't like to dance? They're all the same if you ask me, shallow and self-absorbed." He muttered.

"But not her. She's different. I can see it in her eyes..." I said, remembering. Her eyes seemed so deep, and so full of emotion. She seemed graceful and strong at the same time, and her eyes captivated me. But there was one thing that bugged me. I had a feeling she wasn't being entirely truthful about the bruise. I couldn't quiet put my finger on it. It just seemed to me that if she had tripped on the stairs, more than just her arm would be bruised. And the way she nearly reached for the bruise when I invited her to the castle...

"Seriously, you should invite her to the ball. I want to meet this girl who captured you heart. Make sure she's what she says she is and not some girl who just wants to use you." Hans said. I took a deep breath.

"Yeah. Yeah, I think I will." I said. Hans handed me a glittering piece of paper, and I put it in my pocket.

"Make sure she comes!" Hans called as I left the room.

Elsa's POV

"You're right. It's beautiful out here." I said to Jack. I had snuck out of the house after dark, after making sure all of my stepsisters and my stepmother were sleeping of course. Jack had taken me to a beautiful grove of trees, where we had climbed into a tree and gazed up at the stars.

"Glad you like it." Jack said with a smile.

"You know, for a prince you aren't all I expected." I said.

"And what were you expecting?" Jack asked playfully. I shrugged.

"I'm not sure. I guess some pompous, arrogant, snooty, self-loving, rich snob." I said playfully. Jack laughed.

"Well, you're not all I expected either." He said.

"Oh. And what did you expect?" I said playfully.

"A beautiful, smart, simple country girl." Jack said. I looked at the ground. I had no idea how to take that. Jack room my hand in his.

"But instead, I found a gorgeous, wise, kind, compassionate, mysterious woman." He said. I smiled and looked at him.

"Here, I want you to have this." Jack finally said, handing me a piece of paper. I couldn't read it in the dark.

"What is it?" I asked curiously.

"An invitation to the ball." He replied. My heart stopped.

"Jack, I want to, but..." I started to say, then trailed off.

"You're beautiful. Don't worry about a dress or how you look. You're amazing just the way you are." He said.

"That's not it-" I started to say, but Jack cut me off.

"Just promise that you'll consider it." He said. I sighed.

"I... I promise." I said.
