I was staring at myself in a mirror, straightening out the cuffs of my jacket, my eyes glowing yellow. Suddenly, the reflection switched to my normal self, and the demon grinned at me.
"We having fun yet?" the demon asked.
"Get out of me," I snarled at it from in the mirror.
"Not yet," the demon smirked. "I still need you for my plans."
"I never agreed to this!"
"Oh, Ellie Bear, I don't need your permission to possess your body. It's a convenience only demons have the pleasure of having."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Well, angels have to get your say so to ride around in your skin, of course. Demons can just skip that step."
"A-angels? There's no such thing."
"Ellie, Ellie, Ellie. For someone with the abilities you have, you sure don't have a very open mind, now do you?"
I just glared at my possessed body, waiting for the punchline.
"That voice you hear whenever that special instinct of yours kicks in really bad? It's an angel, Eleanor."
My eyes widened, and my mouth gaped open as the demon punched the mirror. Suddenly, the reflection returned to normal, sporting yellow eyes once more.
"Now, be a good little girl and stay quiet. It's almost showtime."
⁘
Jake pulled up to a railroad track and parked his car. Climbing out, he looked around for a few moments, and then turned and spotted me.
"Howdy, Jake," I grinned. "So, did you have a nice trip?"
"I'm here. I did what you asked. Now what?"
"Fifty miles, that-a-way," I pointed the opposite direction of where Jake was standing, across the railroad tracks. "There's a cemetery. A crypt. You got to open that for me. Think you can manage that, sport?"
"You know what? Screw you and your freaky orders," Jake spat. "Go do it yourself."
"Oh, I can't. I can't go that way- not yet."
"Why not?"
"I just can't," I insisted. "But if you're going to open that crypt for me, you're gonna need a key."
From inside my jacket, I produced the Colt, holding it in the air for Jake to see.
"A gun?"
"Oh, this isn't just any gun, Jake. This is the only gun in the entire universe that can shoot me dead."
I put the gun to my head, as if I was about to shoot myself.
"Is that so?"
"Yep. Here, take it."
I handed the gun to Jake, who cocked it before pointing it back at my head.
"Oh, my. I'm so shocked by this unforeseen turn of events," I spoke sarcastically. "Go ahead, Jake. Squeeze that trigger. Be all you can be. This'll all be over. Your life can go back to normal. Of course, the Army won't take you back, cause you're AWOL. But I'm sure you could get your old job at the factory back. But then, on the other hand, the rest of your life, and your family's, could be money and honey, health and wealth, every day is ice cream sundae. And all you have to do is this one little thing."
"Why me?" Jake spat.
"Oh, Jake. It's got to be you. I've been waiting for you for a very long time. You're my leader. You open that crypt, and you will have your army."
"You're talking about the end of the world."
"No, not the end- the beginning... a better world, where your family will be protected. More than that. They'll be royalty. Buddy boy, you have the chance to get in on the ground floor of a thrilling opportunity. Whaddaya say? It's your call."
After a tense moment, Jake lowered the gun.
"That-a-baby," I grinned.
⁘
The second the railway broke after Jake opened the door to the crypt, I appeared in the cemetery directly behind Dean, who was holding the Colt. Holding out a hand, I flung the Colt from Dean's hand into mine. Dean turned around to face me, astonished.
"Boys shouldn't play with Daddy's guns," I taunted.
With another wave of my hand, Dean was sent flying into the air, hitting his head on a tombstone and lying there, stunned. Over by the crypt, Sam looked back from helping Bobby and Ellen try to close the doors and saw Dean lying on the ground and then locked eyes with me. I smiled back at him.
"Dean!" he shouted.
He let go of the gate, running toward his brother. I easily flung him into a nearby tree.
"I'll get to you in a minute, champ," I told him. "But I'm proud of you- knew you had it in you."
I turned back to Dean, who was struggling to sit up.
"Sit a spell," I smirked, using my powers to throw him against a post. "So, Dean... I gotta thank you. You see, demons can't resurrect people unless a deal is made. I know, red tape- it'll make you nuts. But thanks to you, Sammy's back in rotation. Now I wasn't counting on that, but I'm glad. I liked him better than Jake, anyhow. Tell me- have you ever heard the expression, 'if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is?'"
"You call that deal good?" Dean spat.
"Well, it's a better shake than your dad ever got. And you never wondered why? I'm surprised at you. I mean..."
I stalked closer to him, getting up in his face.
"You saw what your brother just did to Jake, right? That was pretty cold, wasn't it?" I chuckled. "How certain are you that what you brought back is 100%, pure, Sam?"
Sam was staring over at us with a mortified expression. In addition to the demon smoke pouring out of the Devil's Gate, ghosts had begun to walk out. I continued to laugh at Dean.
"You of all people should know, that what's dead, should stay dead. Anyway... thanks a bunch. I knew I kept you alive for some reason. Until now, anyway. I couldn't have done it without your pathetic, self loathing, self destructive desire to sacrifice yourself for your family."
As I cocked the Colt and aimed it at Dean's head, something grabbed me from behind. My body fell to the ground, unconscious. A few moments later, Yellow Eyes entered back into me and I stood up. I looked over to see Dean pointing the colt at me. Inside my body, I wrestled for control, and suddenly I overpowered the demon. I saw hesitation flicker in Dean's eyes as I took control of my body once more.
"It's okay, Dean," I smiled. "Shoot me."
A single tear rolled down Dean's cheek as he pulled the trigger and my world went black.
⁘
I gasped, sitting up in the back of the Impala. It swerved slightly before righting itself in its lane.
"Ellie!" Dean cried. "What... How?"
"I don't know," I shook my head.
I looked between the brothers in the front seat, who both looked just as shocked as I felt.
