Onika POV
January 2nd, 2018
6:30am
"Hurry up this is residency not kindergarten, rounding starts in 5 minutes! Stop socializing start moving!" A doctor shouted into the locker room, startling everyone.
"OWW!!" I was bending over tying my shoes when the bottom of someone's shoe almost crushed my fingers.
"Oh my God I'm so sorry..." This girl knelt down and looked at my hand. She's beautiful, fair skinned with big almond brown eyes with beautiful sculpted eyebrows that matched her round face. "I should have watched where I was going, that doctor just scared the shit out of me, it's my second year here again. I repeated my first year because I faile- Oh my God I'm babbling my name is Lauren. What's yours?"
"Onika...But Nicki for short." I said giving her an awkward smile.
"Hi Nicki, I'm sorry for your hand again-."
"STOP ALL THIS SOCIALIZING AND GET IN LINE!" The doctor shouted again; her glance fell on Lauren. "And you Miss London, you're treading real light this year. One mess up and I'll have you out of this program as quick as you can say Texas-Bama! Do I make myself clear?"
"Y-Yes Mam." Lauren answered looking down at her shoes, this doctor has her shooked.
We all filed out in a line following who I assume would be our resident coordinator. We walked in a huge conference room; a few notable surgeons sat at the head of the table. But the one that sat in the middle was breathtaking, she was not any average surgeon either. She was the most famous Cardiothoracic surgeon of her generation, the first black woman and surgeon to have 8 Harper-Avery awards in history. This woman is a beast at her profession and carries the ego as she should.
We took our seats around the conference table, I decided to sit next to Lauren at the very end.
The middle age doctor who was screaming at us stood up. "Good morning residents my name is Dr. Knowles-Lawson, I am a general surgeon with 20 years under my belt. I will be your residency coordinator for the next year. It is with great privilege to welcome you to Mount Sinai Medical, the top learning hospital in the country. Last year you were bottom feeders in medical school and you still are now." She scoffed, earning a few chuckles from the surgeons at the head of the table, but her she never once looked up from her phone aimlessly typing away with concentration.
"So, to get to know you guys, state your name, medical school, and interest area. Make it quick we don't have all day. Starting with you pretty boy." Dr. Lawson pointed at the guy at the end of the table.
He stood up quickly, giving me a full view of his beauty. "My name is Michael B. Jordan, I graduated from University of Columbia, my area of interest is in orthopedic surgery."
The girl next to him stood up grinning from ear to ear. "Hey ya'll my name Belcalis-."
Lauren burst in to giggles next to me, causing the girl to look down the table toward us. "What's funny smurf?" She shot back.
"BIT-."
"MISS LONDON! STEP OUT!" Dr. Lawson shouted.
Lauren pushed back her chair and stormed out the conference room.
"As I was saying before I was rudely interrupted, my name Becalis Almanzar but ya'll could call me Cardi for short. And my interest of study is in pediatric surgery."
"Thank you, Ms. Almanzar, by the time we walk out this room those filthy long disease infested acrylic nails need to be off your hand. Understand?"
