The legend of Kalfate is older than many civilizations. Some say legend does Kalfate no justice. Acknowledging Kalfate as The Keeper of the Answer is the only true Justice-believing in his bounty, believing in his truth.
In Seeker lore he arrived at the moment of enlightenment when Seekers first knew their mission was to seek out the answer.
"Deposited into reality by a Being indescribable",' is how the ancient tome reads. That one line is the origin story of Kalfate. Over eons the story has stretched and melted, reformed and revised, as stories often do. But the narrative tells of an ancient presence that brought Kalfate to Credible Prime where he walked among The Seekers before they were Seekers. According to the tale he explained that he was the Beacon of Truth and that through his presence came the meaning behind everything-The Existential Answer.
No images of Kalfate exist. Artists were forbidden to illustrate or paint his image so many myths created an image that echoed humanity but was, at the same time, something exceedingly more. The Yend say that Kalfate was the essence of their quest, a Being that was formless but also capable of mimicking other life forms and objects. According to the Yend, Kalfate wasn't a possessor of divine knowledge. He was merely a life form that existed on a plane beyond scientific explanation. Pragmatica told of a race of being that scientists had simply not deciphered. Their view of Kalfate was teeming with logic; a Field of Life that isn't biological as much as it is Quantum. The Field has conscience and is a being that can imitate any molecular composition. This Essence could reside within a footstool as much as it could an adult male. The essence of Kalfate can build its image accordingly and exist in The Expanse forever. During The Great Split, the two legends of Kalfate divided and took on their own trajectory. Both explanations however, were steeped in a shadowy mystique that became the legends and fairy tales that children of the Yend and children of The Seekers learned in school and learned in life. The irony of it all is that the story was the same, vno matter Seeker or Yend. It was as different as the Suns and moons on Credible Prime. It was the same story, just told differently. And that difference launched atrocities beyond imagination. But in today's Vast, Kalfate has been assigned mythical status no matter what form he ( or It) is thought to take.
The Kalfate that Seekers look for was a man, always a man as the ancient Tome points out.
" 'Tis of man that Kalfate heeds, as if we saw ourselves upon the street. But his Beacon eschews the greatness of The Vast. Kalfate is the Life Force of us all. Conscious and Sentient"
Kalfate is everywhere and everything. Or Kalfate is a Being of flesh and blood walking among the rest in secret perhaps but always alive nonetheless.
Faith is the certainty of things others find uncertain. But when an entire civilization subscribes to the same certainty it becomes that body's truth. Uninterrupted Faith can manifest itself into universal acceptance. Two truths espousing the same thing differently cannot coexist, hence the Seeker/ Yend division. Hence the Seeker/Yend war of Kalfate, The Great Split, raging on across The Expanse. It is the race to find Kalfate and to find the answer.
