I Got You Babe - Sonny & Cher
__________
MY FEET SLAPPED THE concrete floor for the thousandth time that day, becoming sheer white noise in the background of my chaotic existence.
After finishing dinner, the soldiers entered the cafeteria and began escorting us out maze by maze—with the Gladers and I being from "Maze A", we were the first to go. So, for the fourth or so time today, we travelled through the winding halls of the fortified Sanctuary guided by three stoic soldiers—who are hopefully leading us to our room where I will hopefully slip into a coma.
Shuffling through the halls like a sleep-deprived zombie, I took tired steps, my whole body trembling with overexerted muscles and fragile bones. Each of my limbs felt like they weighed a ton, too sore and too tired to be continuously used.
My twitchy fingers held onto my lower stomach, randomly starting to feel a sharp ache in the space below my belly button. Instantly, I knew what I was facing—cramps.
"Literally the worst timing ever." I muttered bitterly to my uterus.
We moved in a weary cluster, our feet dragging a little more fatigued behind our slumped forms and our eyes drooping with each heavy step. It wouldn't take long for all of us to crash, it was just dealing with the nightmares that scared me.
Being that I was the only one who hadn't slept on the chopper ride here, I trailed near the back—hauling my poor spent body behind everyone else with my sleepy eyes unfocused on the floor.
Twisting down another hall, we entered a corridor of silver walls and titanium doors. In silence, we padded through the middle of the metallic passage before halting at the very end behind the three soldiers.
Suddenly, from the back of the group, all I could hear was a faint beep before an obnoxious clank.
"Alright, everyone inside."
Peeling my hazed gaze from the dull ground, I peered ahead and found our small army in front of one of the many titanium doors, the steel entrance held wide open as the soldiers waited for us on the outside, standing next to the keypad that unlocked the thick metallic door.
The boys filed in, their exhausted exteriors instantly picking up the moment they entered the room, excited squabble and clamor reverberating from within the seemingly large room.
"Oh, I got top-bunk!"
"Too slow!"
Oh my god, we have bunk beds! I thought, perking up with excitement.
Newt and Thomas waited in front of me as the other boys eagerly slipped in. The moment the pair entered and their silhouettes disappeared from view, I was finally able to observe our room.
