I haven't been grocery shopping since I was living on my own. Valen and Amir needed my best input to make a good batch of brownies for a dinner party. We were just getting ready to check out, but I feel like an item is missing.

"What's wrong?" Amir asks.

"We are missing something..." I say.

I look through the cart and compare it to the list. Then I finally notice what's wrong.

"Oh it's the walnuts! We forgot them."

Valen rolls his eyes, "I'll go get them."

"Thank you." I smile.

Amir and I pull the cart to the side and wait.

"It feels so weird being back in here." I say.

"Why is that?"

"I don't know. It all just feels so... normal."

"I guess so. I kind of lost the lining between what's normal or not."

"Yeah..."

Valen is taking forever with these walnuts. We are just looking around the store now.

"Some girls are walking towards us." Amir says, looking behind me.

"What?" I ask.

I spin around and feel my anxiety spike. I can't believe what I am seeing. My school friends are walking towards us. Melissa, the girl who's party I left, and our other friend Kara. I may have been going to parties with them, but they are still bitches. All of my high school friends were.

They approach us with shocked faces.

"Mileva!? We haven't seen you since you left my party! Where have you been girl?" Asks Melissa.

"I've been... busy!" I answer.

They look over at Amir, who is just as confused as they are.

"Is he your boyfriend? He's super hot..." Kara says.

Amir breaks out into laughter. I hit him on the shoulder.

"No, he's not." I say.

Amir calms down his laughs, "Wait until she sees the real one." He says.

I can't find any words to explain this. I can't even answer my own questions. Melissa and Kara are so confused.

"Real one?" Melissa asks.

As if on cue, Valen walks over to our cart. He is buried in his phone, so he doesn't see the others.

"Sorry I took so long. I couldn't find the isle..." He trails off as he sees my friends.

Their eyes look scared. Maybe not scared of him, but for my wellbeing. They must see all of his scars. They keep looking at both of us, trying to put together this puzzle. Amir has just started laughing again.

"These are my friends Melissa and Kara from high school..."

"Yeah I put that much together." He smirks at me.

As he turns to put the walnuts in the cart, they look at me for some sort of answer. Maybe even a hint that I'm okay would satisfy them.

"What high school did you guys go to?" Valen asks.

"Vanguard..." Melissa answers.

"Oh, okay." Valen says.

"Where did you two go?" I ask him and Amir.

"We were at elro." Valen says.

"Cool." I smile.

It also feels too normal talking about simple stuff like this. Our high schools are rivals. That feels like something I would have cared about just a few months ago.
