prologue - what's eating y/n y/l/n?

——

her smile never reached her eyes no matter how hard she tried. this is something ariana grande noticed about her fellow classmate, y/n y/l/n.

y/n smiled, sure she did. but it never really looked like she meant it. her eyes never crinkled or glistened, her straight teeth never shining or showing. just soft lips pulled into a closed, slightly-curved line—what y/n considered her best smile.

ariana watched. watched as the older girl "smiled" and "laughed" with her friends. watched as she walked alone through the hallway with her head held high but with her crown still managing to fall and cover her eyes. watched as new tattoos littered her arms and the rest of her body as years passed to create a story—a story ariana wanted to know.

her interest with the girl spiked in 8th grade when y/n didn't show up to school for two weeks. it was odd, the girl had never missed a day of school since kindergarten. when she came back, she almost looked dead. she looked sad. she looked lost. since the day she came back, ariana never saw that big, glowing smile that once sat on her face. not once.

despite her closed off-ness and lonesomeness, ariana quickly realized she had a crush on the girl. what she once told herself was "trying to figure her out" was now "damn, she looks so good today." it was 9th grade when she discovered her crush on the girl and she flipped. she'd never had a crush on a girl before; let alone a girl she's never talked to.

the small girl soon came to terms with her sexuality and came out as bisexual her sophomore year of high school.

ariana caught herself staring more frequently and she caught things no other has.

she noticed when y/n flinched if someone tried to give her a high-five. no one else did. she heard the dull laugh that came from her throat in a croak. no one else did. she saw the eyes that silently pleaded for help and the pink lips that never would. she saw her.

the beginning of her senior year, ariana had had enough. she was tired of seeing the girl so sad. living, but not living. after 5 years, ariana was going to know what was wrong with the girl that had stolen her heart.

——

something was eating y/n y/l/n, and ariana was going to find out.
