Zara sat in the corner of the mead hall later that night, glaring into her drink, trying to make sense of things. She had swapped her armor for a tavern-style dress for relaxing in, but she couldn't relax...
Vilkas wasn't interested in her... that couldn't be it... right?
It had been bothering her since Farkas made the suggestion that afternoon... it just couldn't be true...
She wanted it to be true... she hadn't realized quite how much she wished it was until Farkas had suggested it, but still... it just couldn't be...
Could it?
She looked up and across the hall to where Vilkas was sitting quietly in a corner, scowling at a book. He'd been in a foul mood ever since whatever Farkas had told him before she'd returned with Lydia.
Farkas and Lydia were outside talking now, and Zara was intentionally leaving them alone. Vilkas hadn't so much as looked up at her since she came inside.
Actually, it had been Vilkas's scowl that drove them to enjoy dinner outside in the first place. Which hadn't been bad, the weather was actually quite nice and the cool air was the perfect excuse for Lydia and Farkas to sit closer together. Zara had excused herself once Farkas finally worked up the nerve to put an arm around her shoulders... hopefully that was going well now...
But now that Zara was back inside, her mind had run back to the grumpy twin...
What had Farkas told him?
Why had he scowled at her like she was the one who'd done something wrong?
She watched him for several moments, but he neither looked up at her, nor turned the page...
He wasn't even reading, Zara realized... the book was an excuse to keep people from bothering him...
Zara downed her drink and got another...
...then another...
Vilkas was still glaring at his book... still not looking up at her...
Zara didn't like this. She missed the days when Vilkas and Farkas would both sit on either side of her at dinner, laughing and telling stories... accusing each other of exaggerating, getting into drinking contests... challenging each other to spar or arm-wrestle... challenging her to spar or arm-wrestle...
She missed sitting up at night reading books with Vilkas... the way he'd smile so happily when she brought home a new book for them to enjoy...
It had been so fun before Vilkas had started getting grumpy and shutting her out again...
But what could Zara do about it?
"...sit in his lap and kiss him," Farkas had suggested...
Zara shook her head... that surely wouldn't fix the problem.
She got another drink.
She wished that would fix the problem... she'd gladly...
Wait... she would?
Her heart jumped at the thought...
How would he react if she did just walk up and kiss him?
Probably get more angry honestly... probably never speak to her again...
But he wasn't exactly speaking to her now...
Zara got another drink.
Honestly it might be worth a try...
She still hadn't even seen him turn a page, something was obviously bothering him... what if Farkas was right?
Zara downed her last drink and got up, the room was a little wobbly, but she'd been worse.
