Vilkas woke in the morning and grumpily rolled over and went back to sleep. He had no intentions of showing his face today. He managed to doze back off, only to be woken by the sound of someone trying to pick his lock a few hours later.
"Go away," he growled at the door.
Whoever was out there ignored him and kept fiddling with his lock, then...
"Oh for fuck sake..." Farkas complained, and with a loud crash, Vilkas's door burst open.
Vilkas sat bolt upright in bed to see Farkas grumpily standing in his doorway, behind Lillia who was kneeling on the floor holding a broken lock pick, looking into the room at Vilkas in sheepish relief.
"There," Farkas said bluntly, "he's alive." Despite his blunt tone and grumpy expression Vilkas recognized the hint of relief in Farkas's tone as well.
"Thank you," Lillia sighed as she got to her feet.
"Alright then," Farkas nodded, "you know where I'll be."
"Yes, good luck, brother," Lillia replied with a warm smile at Farkas.
"Thanks," Farkas's furrowed brow shifted to more of a smirk as he looked from Vilkas to Lillia and back again before giving Vilkas a knowing smirk and then turning to head back down the hall.
Vilkas just blinked in confusion, slowly turning to put his feet on the floor as Farkas left...
They weren't acting like an engaged couple... not even like a couple really...
Had he misunderstood?
Then Lillia came to the side of his bed and Vilkas's attention was all on her... she was wearing her dragon scale armor and boots but she'd taken off her gloves and bracers and hadn't put her helmet on yet... her hair was in a long braid over her shoulder and her cheeks were flushed lightly in embarrassment.
"I'm sorry for that," she whispered looking back at Vilkas's broken door frame, "when you weren't up, Farkas and I— well, mainly I was worried..." she was looking over him in concern now. "We heard you lock it last night..." she whispered, "when you didn't come out this morning, I was afraid..." her voice caught in her throat and Vilkas realized there were tears in her eyes.
"Lillia?" He breathed as she reached to gently cup the sides of his face.
"F-Farkas assured me you wouldn't jump to conclusions or do anything foolish, so I didn't worry last night, but when you didn't get up this morning..." her voice trembled and she gently swept a few strands of his hair from his face, "I... I was afraid..." she stopped again and one of the tears fell down her cheek.
Vilkas's heart clenched. "I'm alright," he assured her. He reached up to wipe the tear from her cheek, but more just fell and she leaned forward and wrapped her arms around his neck.
Vilkas's breath caught in his throat as he almost reflexively wrapped his arms around her waist. She practically collapsed into his embrace and tucked her face against the crook of his neck, dropping to her knees on the bed beside him.
"I was afraid we were going to find you in here with another of those damned green bottles," she whispered.
Vilkas felt her tears on his shoulder and he held her a little tighter. "I'm sorry I worried you," he replied guiltily, but his heart began to jump with hope again as she hugged him. Even without his beast blood he could smell the sweetness of her soap mixing with the smoky scent of her dragon scales now.
Then she pulled back so she could look him in the eyes and Vilkas kept his arms loosely around her, not bothering to hide the hope in his eyes as he gazed back at her...
"Why didn't you get up for breakfast?" She asked, looking at him in sad confusion.
Vilkas dropped his gaze in embarrassment. "I... may have... eavesdropped and... jumped to conclusions," he admitted quietly.
"What conclusion did you jump to?" She asked softly as she ran her hands up into his hair and gently tilted his head back so he looked up at her again. She just looked so genuinely worried about him, Vilkas couldn't lie to her...
"That you'd agreed to marry my brother..." he breathed in an embarrassed whisper.
Her face lit into a smile at that and a slight blush rose to her cheeks... Ysmir, she really was as beautiful as a sunrise.
"No," she replied with a nearly glowing smile. "He wanted my blessing to marry my Housecarl," she explained, "since he'll be taking her out of my services and such, he thought it was proper to ask me."
"Lydia," Vilkas said, the realization slowly dawning on him...
Lydia had been the name Farkas had muttered in his drunken ramblings... not Lillia...
...And Lillia had again come to his room... was in his arms... and was smiling that beautiful smile... at him...
Vilkas thought his heart might beat out of his chest as he glanced to her soft looking, pink lips... and then those lips quirked into a small smirk.
"Vilkas," she whispered, "if you wish anything of me, you need only ask..."
Vilkas looked back to her eyes in hopeful disbelief, but saw only genuine affection in her smile.
"Lillia," he smiled, pulling her slowly closer, "please... let me accompany you on your adventures..."
"Of course," she grinned, leaning even closer to rest her forehead against his, "I'm going to need a new traveling companion... but is that all you'd ask of me?"
"No," he breathed before lifting his face to capture her lips in an eager kiss.
To his delight she kissed him back just as eagerly, wrapping her arms more tightly around his shoulders.
