It was your first day at Nekoma High and you were super self-conscious in your new uniform. The skirt felt too short and your mum, being the ultra-frugal type, had bought all your shirts in the winter sale. Unfortunately, you'd had a growth spurt since then and they were now really tight across your chest only adding to the feeling of over exposure.
You didn't like people looking at you, you avoided people's eyes as much as possible. Luckily it was still cold outside this early in spring, so you were able to cover up with a jumper which you begged your mum to buy two sizes too big.
It was thanks to this jumper you were able to get through the morning relatively un-noticed. As the lunch bell rang you breathed a sigh of relief and waited for the classroom to empty a bit before heading out to find the stairs to the roof. Sure, it was cold out, but eating lunch in the classroom with the rest of the class who had brought bentos was much less appealing than numb fingers.
You pushed open the heavy fire door at the top of the stairs, noticing that it had already been propped open with an old broken chair leg. Someone else must have had the same idea as you and beaten you to the punch. You sighed, well it was too late to find another spot now, and in any case, the roof should be big enough that you wouldn't have to sit too close to whoever it was.
The wind blew your hair across your face as you stepped out into the frigid air; you brushed it back behind your ears trying to simultaneously stop the wind lifting your skirt with your other hand. You looked across the rectangular terrace, it was surrounded by high fences to prevent anyone from falling and there were a couple of long forgotten planters along the far edge now only containing a few scraggly plants and a lot of weeds. It was next to these that you saw the boy who had gotten here before you.
He was a slender boy with bleached hair, crouched down playing a video game with a convenience store sandwich tucked in between his knees. He looked up as you stepped out of the doorway and made your way to a slightly more sheltered spot on the other side of the planters.
"Hey." He said in a soft voice, before looking back down and resuming his game.
"Hey." You managed back, highly embarrassed that he'd actually spoken to you.
You sat down on the cold floor and tucked your skirt carefully between your legs so the wind wouldn't catch it again as you ate. You pulled out your bento and opened the lid. Your mum had made an effort for your first day of high school, giving you cute little sausage octopi and egg rolls with your rice and vegetables. This made you smile as you picked up your chopsticks and dug in.
The bell signalling the end of lunch rang and the boy with the blond hair stood up, tucked his Nintendo into his bag and headed towards the staircase, he reached the door and turned as you also began to get up from the floor.
"See you later." Was all he said as he walked through the door leaving the chair leg in place so the door didn't lock you out on the rooftop.
You straightened your skirt and threw your bag over your shoulder before following him back inside, knocking the chair leg out of the way so the door would close properly.
You'd given the boy enough time to go on ahead of you so that you wouldn't feel obligated to talk to him on your way down the stairs, it wasn't until you reached your classroom ready for afternoon lessons that you noticed he was in your class. Not only in your class, but he was in the chair right behind you. No wonder he had said see you later rather than goodbye. You had wondered at the time if maybe he expected to see you at lunch again tomorrow.
The next day you paid more attention to the roll call in the morning so you could learn his name without directly asking him. It was Kozume. Lessons seemed to go pretty quickly that morning and before you knew it, it was lunch time again.
Kozume had already stood up and was headed towards the door. You gave him chance to walk ahead a little before following him up the stairs once again to the roof.
He took the same spot he had yesterday, as did you. Once again, the two of you sat in silence as you ate your lunches and he played his game.
This trend continued every day for the first week and you soon grew comfortable around the boy. By Friday you didn't even bother giving him space to walk ahead of you, confident now that he was as content to maintain the silence between the two of you as you were.
You walked side by side up to the roof and took up your usual spots. Today was less windy and the sun was a bit warmer. You pulled out a book to read after you had eaten your lunch. You had started reading it in the break before school started, however with all the homework you'd been given, you hadn't had chance to pick it up for a while. But with the weekend approaching you'd have more time to catch up on your growing pile of assignments and thought you could spare a few minutes to read some more.
You were only a page in when the fire door slammed open making you jump and drop your book. You picked it up quickly and looked over to see who had disturbed yours and Kozume's quiet sanctuary.
It was a tall second year boy with black hair that was messily spiked up apart from his fringe, which he let flop in front of his face. He had an easy confident air about him, and he was very handsome. He scanned the roof top spotting you first before his eyes landed on Kozume.
You quickly hid your face behind the pages of your book as your cheeks turned pink from making eye contact with him.
"There you are Kenma! I might have known I'd find you hidden away up here." Said the tall boy striding over to Kozume.
"Oh, hey Kuroo." Kozume replied, only briefly looking up from his game.
"I noticed you haven't signed up to the Volleyball team yet. I'm not going to let you weasel out of playing this year. You know we need you and your brain."
Kozume signed, "Do I have to?"
"Yes." Kuroo said simply.
"Ok." Kozume said putting his game away early and standing up. He was a lot smaller than Kuroo, but he didn't seem intimidated by the second year. It looked like they were good friends already, you guessed they must know each other from middle school.
"Who's your friend here?" Kuroo said, making his way over to you with a grin. You flinched and tried to make yourself as small as possible as if in doing so you might become invisible.
"She's L/N from my class, leave her alone." Kozume said with almost a threat in his soft voice.
Kuroo seemed to listen to him and stopped his advance towards you, he stopped about 4 feet away and simply said "Nice to meet you L/N." before turning back to Kozume and the door.
"Let's go hand in your club application form, I've already filled it out for you." Kuroo said with a smirk holding up a piece of paper and waving it in Kozume's face.
He took the paper from him with a slightly dejected expression. Before he followed Kuroo out of the door, he turned to see you peeking over the top of your book at the pair.
"See you." He said before exiting after his friend.
"Bye." You eventually managed to say to the empty roof top after they'd disappeared from view.
Kozume got back to class after you that afternoon, you looked up to see him enter, behind him in the corridor was Kuroo. He spotted you looking at him and waved through the open door making you blush and look forward towards the teacher's desk as if you hadn't been looking at him.
Kozume sat in his seat behind you and spoke for the first time to you in the classroom.
"Don't mind Kuroo, he can be a bit cocky but he's a good guy."
"Oh, um, ok." You said, not sure what else you should say.
Just then the teacher entered the room to start the lesson and you turned around quickly in your chair to face the front.
