The faint glow of the full moon shined a spotlight on Yumeko's peaceful face. Her tiny breaths played a steady rhythm for only Mary to listen to. Her perfectly round face slightly pouted from how relaxed her jaw was. Hands covered by her big sweater sleeves huddled in front of her neck. Mary mindlessly stroked the thigh—that had strayed a bit from around her waist since they fell asleep—from under the thin sheet covering the lower half of their torsos.
She'd honestly forgotten what woke her up in the middle of the night. It didn't really matter now that she'd been admiring for so long.
Yumeko had always been a trap. She used to lure her classmates into gambling their lives away with her adorable demeanor and bell tinkle laugh. Right now, Mary couldn't find the motivation to close her eyes and stop looking at her beauty.
Back then, Mary was afraid of her like the rest of the academy, and honestly, who wouldn't be? She will never forget her days as a housepet and who put her their.
Now that she knew Yumeko better than the lines on her hands, she wasn't scared anymore.
She knew there were no malice behind those smiling lips. Her devil's red eyes have started to appear magenta. Yumeko wasn't the same gambling addict she was years ago.
Mary just realized the stupid grin pulling her cheeks. They'd both changed a lot since their days at Hyakkaou. How did all of her misfortune in her high school years lead Mary to Yumeko? And if they brought them together, is it really misfortune? In hindsight, maybe not.
Mary struck gold.
Yumeko reached out to Mary's shoulder and scooted herself under her chin. Humming a sigh of approval, she snuggled, wrapped her arms, and returned her leg around Mary's waist.
Mary struck an entire pot of gold.
She gently stroked the silky black strands of Yumeko's hair.
She couldn't lose this moment to sleep. Not when Yumeko is in her arms, holding gently enough to warm her entire body.
It will take her forever to find her tiredness again. She didn't want to think about the nightmare that waking up will be tomorrow morning. She didn't want to think about anything but Yumeko.
She's always had the power to completely consume all of her thoughts and replace them with her cute way of talking and amazingly intelligence. Mary used to go crazy about the seemingly endless horizon of Yumeko in her mind, but now Mary feels at home with the memories of her girlfriend popping into her head.
She looked out the window. The moon was lower now, blanketed by the buildings that twinkled with sparse windows lit up. They would've blended with the pool of black sky full of stars, but the sharp ridges of the rooftop cut defining lines that broke the picture.
No matter what may have happened years ago, this moment was calm. They were happy... and Mary's eyes felt heavy.
If Yumeko was awake right now, Mary would tell her how beautiful she is and how much she loves her. That's something she couldn't even fathom saying to Yumeko back then.
Mary is confident. She was confident in herself back then, but now she's confident in herself and her relationship.
A yawn was coaxed out of her throat. She wouldn't last much longer. So before she let sleep completely take her, Mary kissed Yumeko's bangs, too tired to move them away.
"I love you, Yume. Good night."
