"What's your favorite color?" Yumeko asked suddenly. She looked up at Mary from a sideways view, and her twin-tails fell in front of her face as she looked down to her lap, where Yumeko's head was happily cradled.

She just realized that, after a year of knowing her, she didn't know Mary's favorite color, "Don't tell me, is it yellow?"

Mary rolled her eyes, "No it's not yellow. I don't know why you'd even think that." Her signature sarcasm laced with her voice.

"I guess my hunch was wrong," Yumeko said as she reached her hand up to feel the worn material of Mary's lemon-colored t-shirt.

"Oh my gosh," she tapped Yumeko's hand away, "but seriously, it's not yellow."

"Is it gold?"

"No."

"Sunflower?"

"No."

"Not even honey?"

"No? Where are you getting these colors from?"

Yumeko huffed, throwing her comforter over her legs, "Yellow doesn't really have any other color names."

"Yeah, which is why it's not my favorite," Mary persisted, resting her back on the headboard.

"But you have yellow hair, yellow eyes—"

"Hazel."

"—and a yellow room. Also, I'm pretty sure your entire wardrobe is yellow."

"Okay, those are all true, but there are just better colors," Mary played with Yumeko's incredibly long hair over her shoulder.

"Like what?"

"Like red."

A smirk crawled onto Yumeko's face as a blush gathered on Mary's cheeks. The maroon flecks in Yumeko's eyes seemed to shine brighter.

"Gosh, it has nothing to do with you! Red has been my favorite color for years," Mary flipped the strands onto Yumeko's face.

She laughed as she flicked them away: "That is not what I'm talking about." Yumeko sustained her smug tone, "Why do you like red?"

Mary tilted her head back in annoyance. "It's a nice color," she said flatly.

"No other reason?"

"No other reason!"

"So you just chose a random color to like?" Yumeko almost sounded horrified.

"It's a color that resonates with me. I don't know what else you want me to say."

"But why?"

Mary took a moment to think about it. Her eyes looked at the ceiling as she mentally listed the answers. Yumeko anticipated them wearily.

"It's convenient," Mary chuckled.

Convenient?!

"Oh my gosh, where's the meaning? Red is such a powerful color. It could mean anger, love, confidence. It's a color for statements and messages! Like, do people wear red lipstick just for nothing? No, they wear it to grab attention!"

Mary just listened as Yumeko ranted. Her eyes were wide and animated as she came up with all sorts of reasons. She even brought up marketing and propaganda tactics.

When she was coming to her conclusion, Yumeko realized how invested Mary looked. Her head was down and slightly tilted to the side, only looking at Yumeko. Mary's gaze made her beating heart trip over itself.

Being so focused on by the sharp eyes, now soft and warm, of Mary Saotome made her want to hide her face and laugh, in a way only giddy and lovestruck teen would be.

"I understand your side of the argument, and I thank you for the enlightenment, but I think my reason for liking red has stayed the same," Mary teased, grabbing Yumeko's hand.

"Really? After I made such convincing points?" Yumeko was plainly baffled.

"But you looked damn cute trying," Mary laced their hands together. She wore a lopsided grin that froze the breath in Yumeko's lungs.

"You're so sweet," she threw the hand connected to Mary's over her eyes and hid her head into Mary's stomach.

"Oh chill, I didn't even say anything!" Mary groaned jokingly.

"But you never say stuff like that!" Yumeko blubbered.

"And I won't anymore if you're gonna act like this!"

Once Yumeko cooled down a bit, she smiled and played with Mary's fingers: "I like you a lot~"

"Gosh, you're so sappy."

"You aren't sappy enough! I could never just like a color because 'it's convenient.' " Yumeko mocked.

"Okay then, what's your favorite color?"

Yumeko's lips curled into another smirk: "Yellow."

"Oh my gosh-"
