"Mark my words, Yumeko Jabami. This will be a gamble you regret accepting," Mary set the thick book balanced between their lap.
"Mary, one day, you'll learn to never second guess my memory," Yumeko opened the album without dropping their eye contact.
"And you should know by now that I am always right," Mary finally looked down at the book. Her competitive smirk melted off her face, and Yumeko knows why. She joined Mary as she studied the first page.
Yumeko had gotten them a couple's photo album for an anniversary years ago. She printed about five hundred pictures from her phone from second-year at the academy to freshman year at university to start their collection. It was a relief she took so many pictures.
The first four were all at Hyakkaou. The top left was a selfie of Yumeko holding her right arm around Mary, head tilted toward her, while the latter wore a bored frown with a peace sign. The bottom right was at Yumemi's concert. Yumeko was in the distance dancing on stage, and Mary was sitting beside Itsuki, who was laughing into her hand. Mary's cheeks and ears were rosy, and her eyes were locked on stage. Yumeko remembers putting a heart sticker on the back of the photo.
"I forgot how cute we were," Mary murmured as she flipped through the film pages. What they were trying to find was further back. Past their first date on the boardwalk, and both graduations, after they got their first apartment together, and made up after their first big fight.
"You're still cute at least," Yumeko lied her head on Mary's shoulder.
"Ugh, don't," Mary complained with a smile in her tone. She flipped and flipped through photos at parties. The bright lights and the shine of Yumeko's jewelry flashed by. Until she stopped on a page.
It contain a vertical photo of Mary looking at rings through a box of glass. The sparkle of the diamonds twinkled her eyes, and her hands were tucked shyly into her maroon winter coat. Yumeko twisted the rock-crusted band around her middle finger lovingly.
"That day was fun," Mary reminisced. Her thumb traced the outline of the picture.
"It really was," flashes of that day played in Yumeko's mind. "I'd never seen you so giddy."
"That updated shortly after."
"It did, meaning you better reaffirm your side," Yumeko said with a smug grin.
"I know I was wearing the gray Hyakkaou University shirt!" Mary said brazenly. "I would know what I was wearing the day you proposed."
"No, no, but I know you were wearing your shark shirt! I would know what you were wearing because I swear I absorbed everything you did into my memory because I was so nervous."
"Then, we'll find out together," Mary leaned in for emphasis.
Yumeko leaned in to match her, "Yes, we will."
They held intense eye contact before they cracked a laugh, and Yumeko gave her a silly peck. "This is for not doing dishes for a week," Yumeko crossed her fingers.
Mary paused for a dramatic emphasis. Then, she turned the page, and their eyes were on the chase.
One with Yumeko cuddling into a sleeping Mary's side, but the blanket covered the front of the shirt. Another with Yumeko playing up a surprised face with Mary in their fridge.
Finally, they found the photo. Yumeko was connecting hands with Mary in the center of the image. Mary was indeed wearing a gray shirt with a shiver of sharks in a circle on the center.
Yumeko laughed, boasting her correctness, while Mary fell back into the couch in defeat: "I told you not to question my memory!"
"What was I thinking wearing that shirt?" Mary sighed.
"You just wanted your fiancee to be even more of a winner," Yumeko giggled into Mary's cheek.
"Even more?"
"I already won finally planning to marry you."
"Gosh, you're so cheesy," she accepted the many kisses from Yumeko all around the side of her face.
"I know," she drew the last syllable out.
"Before I start my week of punishment-"
"For not remembering what you were wearing on a such a momentous day!"
"Yes, that," Mary pulled them up from the back of the couch. "I think we should actually go through the photo album."
"I'd love to!" Yumeko cheered, settling into their couch.
They had a lot of fond memories to get through.
