Something was always missing

5 years ago (Location: J High School)

The fashion department classroom was well lit by the sunshine beaming through the windows. There were several students in the familiar blue jacket, orange vest, gray pants/skirt, and white button-up sitting in groups with their friends and talking.

Daniel was sitting in the middle aisle, besides Zoe with Crystal, Zack, Mira, and Eli (who had snuck out of the beauty department to see them). Vasco and Jace were on their way after getting a snack from the snack bar.

Daniel could remember Zoe was talking about a new idol that debuted, an instant overnight success while Crystal was brushing Mira's hair and braiding it.

Zack was watching Mira bead a friendship bracelet, nodding along every now and then to Zoe's talk.

Eli was giving Crystal pointers who jokingly said that Eli was doing the opposite of what he was taught a french braid was in class.

Daniel then all of a sudden couldn't help but look at the far left aisle, the one desk next to the aisle. The desk at the back where no one sat.

"Hey, do any of you ever get that feeling you're missing someone in your life?" Daniel had asked that question, he didn't know why but he felt an emptiness when he looked over at the empty desk.

Zoe had stopped to think, she was probably thinking of how to answer.

Zack and Mira had looked at each other, then at Daniel before nodding their heads in sync.

Crystal and Eli had paused for a second before Eli remarked, "You mean your soul mate?"

"Eli, be serious. I feel an emptiness when I look at that desk over near the window in the back," Daniel said, pointing at the very desk.

The group looked over at the desk, seeming to think of what to say in response to Daniel's sudden serious attitude.

"Now that I look at it... it does feel... empty... like someone should be sitting there," Zoe said, she looked at Daniel, "Anyone else getting the feeling too?"

"Yeah, I feel we would've been friends... that person who was supposed to be there," Mira said, "I dunno, I feel a bit sad."

Zack patted her shoulder, "I feel I would've gotten on the wrong foot with them, then somehow we'd be friends."

Eli and Crystal looked at Daniel, Eli then spoke, "It may sound crazy, but maybe there's an alternate reality where that person who we're thinking of is sitting there..."

"Thinking the same thing?" Crystal added, Eli nodded.

Daniel remembered biting his lip, then about to speak again when Jace and Vasco came in with snacks and chocolate milk for everyone.

And the conversation ended just like that.

The present:

Jay was about to lift his bangs, removing the hand that was blocking his eyes from Daniel's view when he heard something behind him.

Turning around, Jay heard the rustling and then footsteps. The sound was too confident compared to Joy's usual lighter steps that seemed more energetic.

Not even a knock was given to his closed door, Kitae had just walked in with a few other men in business suits behind him.

Jay gulped, but stood his ground.

He knew this wasn't going to be pretty.

"Okay, what is happening?" Zoe asked, Zack meanwhile took popcorn from Vasco's popcorn bowl to prevent himself from saying something dumb again.
