Chapter 6
"Sorry got to go now squirt," I told Mary, and I watched her pixie features drop, as if I was taking an ice cream away from a five year old. If I didn't know why she was so sad, her face would be comical, something I would laugh about... a lot. But I know she feels the same as I do. She doesn't have some retarded crush on me, but I know that I am her only friend here, she has no one else, even the full on nutters dislike her. I don't understand how anyone could dislike someone like her. She was beautiful, funny, friendly, bubbly at times and she understands me. If I was still human, I would be perfect for her, I would love her, look after her, make her happy. But I am not. I am a stinkin' vampire, have been for centuries, and will be forever. There is no turning back. I am stuck in this icy, rock solid, pale vampire body. And I hate it. I didn't make a concious decision to be one. I was happy being human, a man, a boy. I was happily in education, training in the Armed Forces, ready for war. Then I was attacked, for no reason, bit and left to die. once I knew what i had become, i vowed not to do this to anyone, i wont let anyone go through the pain i have suffered. It was then that i also vowed to help people, not hurt them, for the rest of my life... no wait, eternity. And I am glad I did. You see, I am different than ordinary, run of the mill vampires, as I don't drink blood. In fact, I have never even harmed a human being. Ever.
*Flashback* (In third person)
It was sometime between 1700 and 1710. Kids were EVERYWHERE. The sun was out, mothers were sitting on benches, conversing with other mothers. But there was one set of children that stood out the most. There were 5 of them altogether, out in the park on this lovely day, running around the mud fields, old farm lands that were infertile now. They were each about 15, except one. One boy with sandy hair, bucked teeth, freckles scattered all over his round face. He was tall, gangly, but clean, not greasy at all. His sandy hair was tucked behind his ears, only just long enough to, was scruffy, but not too untidy. His features seem boyish, round, yet he looks around 18. It is confusing as to why he is walking around and playing with the younger children, but that isn't what makes him stand out the most. His tall head bobbed above the other fours as they dashed around the field. His hair was longer than everyone elses, flapping in the breeze before he tucked it back. His hair, at a closer look, was black at the roots, slowly getting lighter and more sandy as it gets down. This gives the idea that it has been bleached, out in the sun. This was more common with boys because they are out more, working, exercising, but girls and women were inside, doing the chores. Again, his hair had nothing to do with him standing out. Other than his height and hair, he looked exactly the same as the other boys. They all stood out too. But it wasn't their hair either. It was how they were dressed. In fact, you couldn't even see any of the other boys' hair. They were wearing hoods. And capes. They were all hand-crafted, but they were wearing capes with hoods, covering parts of their faces, black boots, white stockings and were each carrying wooden stakes in their right hand. The long haired boy was leading the group, taking it seriously, but none of the other boys were so serious. Because he was 18, he should be thinking about family, settling down, but no. He was out, in broad daylight, dressed as a vampire. All of a sudden, the other boys not noticing, the older lad stopped, causing everyone else to walk strait into his back. They each staggered backwards, clutching their faces, except the older one, who steadied himself before turning swiftly around.
"Watch it." He spat at the younger boys, each of their heads snapped up, if they were in any pain, they didn't show it, and went bright red, knowing they were in for a punishment.
"Sorry Norman," They all mumbled in unison. They were staring at their feet now.
"You should be. If you want to carry on accompaniying me, you need to keep your eyes peeled." He looked around the group, then nodded at the oldest of the four, indicating that he followed himself. This guy was the older end of 15, the second oldest of the group. His facial features were harder than Normans, but he was at least a head shorter, making Norman seem more threatening. His hair was cropped short, black, matching his deep brown eyes. He was tall for his age, but looked tiny compared to Norman. Norman span around, facing the black haired boy, and looked him strait in the eye.
"Jack." He barked, leaning over Jack menacingly. Jack shrunk down, but kept the eye contact. "I asked you to bring me Enthusiastic," He paused glancing at the boys, who were quietly whispering to each other. "Males, to carry on my hunt. How can I ever hunt vampires successfully with those..." He paused again, thinking up a suitible word, "Children. I believe in them. They don't. They don't understand me, my life ambitions, unlike you. I don't want to settle down. I want to find them. And Hunt Them. Then Kill Them. I know you understand, but they are immature, they will do for now, but we need numbers. If we are gonna destroy that coven, we need numbers." Norman conluded, he voice softer now.
"Look man, I'm sorry. But they were the only ones that took me seriously. I got laughed at, pointed at, but they came, and for now they will have to do. I know you are passionate, but if we want to destroy some evil creatures, were gonna have to make do with them. Train them, Teach them. Whatever it takes, but I know you can Norm, I believe in you." Jack answered, smiling when he saw Norman's face light up, grinning himself.
"Okay Mate, I see. Shall we go back, and you can introduce me?" Norman said, clear happiness in his voice. Jack smiled again and turned on his heel, leading Norman torwards the boys, who had stopped talking, and were clearly scared, fear a prominent emotion on their face.
"Boys!" Jack called, order strong in his voice, "Now." He ended, as the boys began to dash, lining up into height order. "Alan, Go!" The tallest of the remaining three boys stepped up, bowed to Jack, then bowed to Norman. He was average height for his age. His hair was a light brown and shone in the slight breeze, his face was oval shape, with almond shaped blue eyes. His face was sweet and approachable, and Norman knew why Jack had chose him. "Hi Norman, my name is Alan, I am 15, just gone, and I want to help you hunt down those vampires." He finished, bowed to Norman again and stepped back into the line. This went on for the other two boys, Pete and Jason, who were both 15. Pete wore glasses, had severe acne, but had a really nice personality. His bright blond hair was his main feature, and if he didn't have spots, would be quite attractive. Jason had jet black hair, emerald green eyes and was small for his age. His smile was perfect, white and not one tooth was out of place. After the brief introductions, Norman led his group to his secret meeting place to discuss details of their next assignment.
*End Of Flashback*(back to Norman POV)
I was nudged violently in the ribs, it didn't hurt, but it brought me out of my flashback. I looked down at the little kid smiling back at me, grinning wildly. Ah Mary.
"Hey sleepy," Mary said, the amusement clear in her voice. "Woken have you? Your just as bad as me!" She exclaimed happily, probably thinking she isn't the only crazy one here, despite the fact that she is in an asylum for crazy people.
"Sorry I was daydreaming," I paused, breathing in, and I realised how close I still was to her. I casually stepped away, but keeping eye contact as if I was checking her over. "You're looking rather tired today Mary, are you okay?" She looked shocked, stepped back herself, and checked herself over. I followed her gaze and realised how underweight she is, how abnormally thin she was.
"I'm fine, I'm fine." Mary replied, trying to make it sound unimportant, but the crazed look was still in her eyes.
"Look, Mary, I have to leave, but I will bring you more food tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, until you look healthy again. I will miss you, but I have to go sign off now. Goodbye for now, Mary Alice."
"Okay, bye Norm," She paused cautiously, looking at me, so much fear in her eyes, that it scared me, chilled me right to the bone. Then, unexpectedly, she whispered, clearly to herself not meaning me to hear as I turned away, "Not Phil, don't let Phil come again..." She shuddered, sliding down the wall as I locked her cell for the night. I wandered slowly back to the reception, pondering over Mary's words, what on earth could they mean? Not john? I sighed to myself, as I went to sign out for the night.
What did you think? Don't forget to comment vote ect :) what do you think Phil did? Feedback appreciated :D
