Chapter 9.

Norman's P.O.V

It was all over the news. I noticed the headline: Murderer? Or something more sinister? I felt guilt swelling inside me and no matter how hard I tried to supress it, the feeling kept seeping back through me. I tried to keep my face sad, as everyone elses was, and carried on reading the article. 'Early this morning, Eloise Smith, 61, was taking her cream beagle puppy for a morning stroll. Whilst playing fetch, her dog, Foxtrot, brought back a 'stick' to her. Unfortunately, it wasn't a stick. It was a severed human arm. We caught up with old Eloise for a word on what happened:"It was disgusting and has scarred me for life. Foxtrot came bounding up to me, like any puppy does when playing catch, but dropped the arm once I had screamed. Onlookers heard my scream and came to see what was wrong. Robert, a portly man from the end of my road went to investigate where the arm came from. He jogged back after a while and through his tears he stated 'there is a whole body in there. All ripped up. Blood everywhere'..." At this point Eloise broke down, and was unable to continue. What caused this 'accident' is currently unknown, but we are all wondering, was this just a deranged murderer, or something more worrysome. Something more sinister...' I stopped reading, I couldn't bear it, the guilt was creeping through my body, wanting me to lie down and scream. Why?! I shouted in my mind. I lost control, I was angry, but was it necessary?

"Hey, um... Norman, are you okay man?" Some guy that worked here asked me. I paused for a millisecond, planning what to say before I answered,

"Yeah, but it's a shock; I was good friends with John, I just can't believe someone would be violent and deranged enough to do something like that." I looked away from him, and put my head in my hands. It's all my fault. I decided there was only one person who could cheer me up. Mary.

"I'm.... gonna do my shift." I stated in a meloncholy tone. No-body looked up, so I stood and left. I walked down the familiar route, heading down to Mary Alice's cell, I know she will find a way to cheer me up. She always does. I grab two food bowls of the unattended trolly, as Mary needs feeding up, I swear she will die of starvation or something. I'm at her door now. It creaked ominously as I pushed it open. I heard her gasp, then breathe out in relief as I came into the light and her eyes adjusted.

"Norman," She breathed, "I thought.. for a minute, you were John. But your not. It's you. It's ok." She sighed contendly. She won't be so happy if she found out what I did.

"Hello, Love. You never need to worry 'bout John ever again."

"Huh? Wha-?"

"He was murdered last night. He was found about 3/4's of a mile away, he must have been on his way home." I made my voice sound grave.

"He's.... He's gone? Really? I can't be- Norman are you okay? You seem kinda quiet..." She trailed off. Damn I hoped that she hadn't noticed. Then something clicked back into my brain.

"MARY! Remember that man? In your vision? Wha- Wher- have you seen any more, where is he now?"

"Oh, I um, haven't seen anything, maybe you could keep an eye out him, he will be here any day now..." She tried to act casual, but it didn't work, I saw strait through the panic in her voice. It was building in my body, ridding it of any guilt, it was now full of worry, anxiousness and concerns for Mary's safety.

"Mary, I may have to sneak you out of here soon. That man, he was..." Was I ready to admit this to Mary? I have no choice.

"He was what?" She asked, confusion clear in her tone.

"He was a... vampire." She gasped. "You may or may not believe in vampires, but if I let him come here he will take you away, hurt you, and I can't let that happen."

"How can you stop a vampire? He must be very-" Realisation dawned on her face. "Are you? Are you one as well?" The one question I didn't want to answer. What if she runs, what if she hates me. I seriously hope she doesn't but I have to tell her now.

"Yes."

"Well.... Uh..... You..." She seemed to be at a loss of words. I looked away, the silence was so tense I was sure I could cut it with a knife. After a long, unbearable silence, I looked back up. I saw Mary's eyes slide back into focus. She wasn't ignoring me, I thought with a smile, she was having a vision! Crap a vision!! I looked straight into her eyes.

"Norman." She stated innocently. "It is too late. He is almost here. We don't have time to leave."
