Steve

Saturday was my favorite day of the week. There was no doubt about it. No school, you could stay up as late as you want, curfew was later, but the best part was Steve.

The sun was shining through the blinds in Steve's room when I woke up on Sunday morning. I didn't think much of it until I looked at the clock that read 8:30.

"Steve" I said, smacking his shoulder. He stirred in his sleep until I hit him harder.

"What" he answered

"It's 8:30." Steve immediately sat up and grabbed his clock. The expression on his face showed pure panic, just as I assume mine did.

"You need to get out of here and get home" he said, pushing me off of his bed and finding a pair of jeans to put on.

I grabbed a comb from his desk, ran it through my hair, and started for the door.

"See you later." I yelled, not bothering to stick around for an answer.

I reached the front of the house, went out the door, and closed it softly. I sighed as I knew this was going to well for us to have been getting away with this for a while now. My moment of silence was cut short when I heard the last voice I wanted to hear.

"Holy shit." Dallas said from down the street. I couldn't stand to turn that way. I knew he wasn't alone when I heard someone question him and the sound of dally hitting the other person in the shoulder. I could feel their eyes on me.

"Holy shit." The voice was now recognizable as Johnny, not making this situation any better. I decided I can't get out of this situation. I finally turned around and joined them walking on the street.

"What is little miss y/n doing at Stevie's house." Here we go, Dallas already starting in on the jokes.

"I was dropping off his shirt that I borrowed" this wasn't a complete lie, I did bring it back last night. Johnny snickered from beside Dally. I sent him a side glance, which only made his smile bigger.

"Aren't those the clothes you had on yesterday" Dallas questioned me. He knows what's going on.

"Yea they are actually. I spent the night at my friends but didn't bring extra clothes." Again, not a lie. Steve was my friend.

"Would that friend happen to be Steve" I rolled my eyes, knowing he was right. I had to play this off so they wouldn't know.

"No, Dallas it was not so will you just drop it"

"Woah, getting a little defensive are we" Dally and Johnny laughed. I sped up, walking in front of them until we reached my house. The less questions the less of a chance I crack.

When I reached the gate I saw ponyboy sitting on the porch reading a book. I sent him a smile walking in, his eyes never leaving the page. In the house Two-bit was on the floor with a slice of cake. Mickey Mouse was on the tv.

"Hey Two-bit" I said walking past him into the kitchen. He sent back a wave and a smile, unable to talk with his mouth full of chocolate cake. The kitchen was empty, but the green pancakes on the counter told me that Darry was sleeping in. I didn't bother to take one of the said pancakes, knowing they would be overloaded with sugar. I sat down at the table after grabbing a piece of bread.

Sodapop came bouncing into the kitchen door, stopping when he saw me.

"When did you get here" he asked.

"Like 2 minutes ago." With my answer he continued to his pancakes. He turned back to me.

"How was your sleepover." The kitchen door opened and in walked Johnny and Dallas.

"Yea y/n how was your sleepover" Johnny asked. Soda sent me a confused glance, and I just shook my head.

"It was wonderful guys thank you so much for asking" I got up and went to my room. I heard the front door open and close, knowing it was probably Steve. Here we go.

"Steve! your here." Dallas yelled in an obnoxiously loud voice. I could hear footsteps coming towards my room.
Dally's head came around the door frame. "Steve's here" he said with a smile and a wink. I flipped him off, following him back towards the living room.

By the time I reached the living room, Steve had made it to the green pancakes and Sodapop in the kitchen. Their voices were muffled, but I could make out a few words like "girls", "out", and "today." My heart sped up thinking they were talking about me. I sat on the couch next to Ponyboy who had come inside with Steve.

"Are you ready to go?" Sodapop asked as he came out of the kitchen with Steve.

"Ready as I'll ever be." Steve said with a smirk.

"Where you guys going?" Two-bit asked from his spot on the ground.

I turned my attention towards Soda.

"We're goin' out with Sandy and Evie."

Evie. This can't be right. My attention shifted from Soda to Steve. My throat felt like it was beginning to close. His eyes met mine, but I saw no emotions behind them. He was still going out with Evie. He hadn't talked about her in weeks. In the corner of my eye I could see Ponyboy's eyes on me. He was the only one who knew I liked Steve. From behind me, Johnny was staring at the back of my head. I'm sure he knew, I even bet Pony told him. Soda and Steve grabbed their coats and left the house. I had to get out of there before anyone realized what was going on. I excused myself back to my room, letting the tears fall as soon as my back was turned.

I closed my door and walked to my bed, unable to process what had just happened. Before I could even sit down their was a knock at my door.

"Y/n it's Pony, let me in" I had to let him in, I didn't want to be alone right now. I opened the door and he immediately slipped in my room, shutting the door behind him. As soon as the door was shut he gave me a hug. I broke down in his arms, feeling less than nothing. There was another knock at the door, but they didn't bother to wait for an answer. Johnny came barging in the room and joined in our hug.

"Pony go get her some water please." Pony started to protest saying Johnny should get it, but with one look from Johnny he shut up and left my room.

"Johnny I-" I could barely form a sentence. He cut me off.

"I know." He hugged me tighter.

"No, no, I was at his house last night, we.." He cut me off again

"I know." I broke out of his hug and stared at him. How did he know.

"How" I didn't understand

"You guys left the window open a lot more than you realized I'm guessing. I happened to walk by, on multiple occasions" His cheeks turned a slight shade of pink, embarrassed to admit it.

He's known for a while. That kind of creeped me out. He could hear everything. I hope he didn't stick around too long. Ponyboy came back with the water and handed it to me. I thanked him and took a small sip. A door opened in the hall. Darry's up.

Just as I suspected, Darry stuck his head in my room. He saw I was awake and left, but came back when he saw my tear stained face, and the sad expressions on the boy's.

"What happened?" Darry asked. He shooed the boys from my room, and brought me to the bed to sit down. He sat next to me and began his interrogation.

"Why are you crying"

"Steve." Keeping it brief.

"Why. What did he do." I could see the emotion in Darry's face change from worry and confusion to slight anger.

"Evie" Darry shifted in his seat, clearly uncomfortable. I realized what I had said. "Sorry, that didn't sound right. He's going out with Evie again."

Darry nodded his head understandingly, giving me a hug. "I'm sorry kiddo." After a few moments of silence, he left my room leaving me to be miserable on my own.
