Two years and three months have passed since Jungkook and Jimin said their goodbyes to Taeyoung and Yoongi, letting them return to Gyeongju alone. Taeyoung had hugged her half-brother tight and Yoongi had ruffled his brother's hair as he fondly said:
"I'm pleasantly surprised, Jungkook-ah. It makes sense for you to stay here and represent Silla's rule. It will make it easier to keep Gaya under control. Good thinking."
Jungkook had not corrected the crown prince about his real reason to stay. Instead, he had beamed a bright smile at the reason to stay - his mate.
Since then, the mates had made the trip back to Silla's capital for important holidays like Lunar New Year and Chuseok, but also when King Jinheung fell sick: the king suffered a stroke. He survived, but lost his ability to speak and movement in his right arm and leg.
Indirectly, this is the reason Jimin and Jungkook pay Gyeongju's royal palace a visit now: Yoongi gathered the support of many of the noblemen and pressured the incapacitated king to cede the power to him. Next month, Yoongi will be crowned king. He will reach the goal he had been working towards all his life.
But before that, Yoongi has another mission: make Taeyoung his wife. The preparations for Garye, the royal wedding of the crown prince, have been underway for over a year already and will culminate in the last two of the Six Rites tomorrow: Chinyeong, the greeting of the bride, and Dongroe, the entrance of the bride into the palace.
Under normal circumstances, Chinyeong would take place in the house of the bride's parents. Since Jimin is Taeyoung's closest living relative, it was decided for Taeyoung to stay with him at Jungkook's residence inside the palace for her last night as an unmarried woman. That's why it's Taeyoung and Joonhee who wait in front of the residence when Jimin and Jungkook arrive.
"Jungkook-ah! Jimin-ah! Welcome back." Joonhee grins so wide and happy that her dimples pop deeply.
"ChimChim! Kookie!" Taeyoung excitedly greets them: "Look who's here? Uncle Jimin and Uncle Jungkook..."
The omega hoists her little baby girl higher on her hip, pointing towards the mates. The baby's huge round eyes follow her finger and she giggles in delight when Jungkook makes a funny face for her.
"Come here, little munchkin. Uncle Minnie missed you, Jiso-ya." Jimin coos as he carefully takes his niece from Taeyoung and smooches her cheek, making her giggle even more.
"Taeyoung-ah, she's grown so much." Jungkook gently pats the little round head.
"Yeah, she's had a growth spurt... she's eight months old, after all.
"Eight months already? Gosh, time flies!" Jimin smiles softly at the little girl.
"She's so cute." Jungkook adds, tickling her stocking feet: "I'm glad you don't look like your foul-tempered daddy - but instead as pretty as your mommy and your uncle Minnie."
"Speaking of Yoongi: is he coming over today?" Jimin asks.
"No, that would not be appropriate for the groom." Joonhee explains.
Jungkook rips his attention from Jiso to catch Joonhee in a tight hug and kiss her cheek. His smile is adoring as usual when he says:
"Missed you, Joonie. You and Jackson should come more often to visit us in the South."
"Missed you, too, Guk-ah. But you have no idea how draining this whole wedding has been - the head of the Royal Wedding Directorate is such a pedantic pain in the ass."
