Chapter 13 - Blissful

Laika made it back home around 1am, which happened to be a lot later than she intended. She couldn't help but wonder if her lover was asleep, considering she usually goes to bed rather early, around 10pm.

Her reason for being late, was that even after her evening out at the tavern Laika had to walk Ada back to her house like a true gentlewoman she is, before calling for a carriage and heading back to the Beneviento estate.

She walked inside the house and slowly took her boots off, also leaving her duffle bag by the door and heading straight for the living room where she saw the lights were still turned on.

"Donna?"

The maiden called out, and after only silence followed she realized that she was met with only an empty room, seeing that the woman most probably went to bed and left the lights on for Laika. With a small sigh she turned them off, now the only source of light being the moonlight creeping through the curtains.

'She must be sleeping, it's late..'

Laika thought as she made her way upstairs and headed for her own room, but was proven wrong when she saw light coming from under the door of Donna's room. Surprised and a little guilty that she made her Lady stay awake so late in the night, Laika made her way to the door and with a small knock announced her presence.

"Donna, may I come in?"

"Yes."

Even though her voice was muffled by the door, Laika could hear it was rather harsh and raspy. Laika reasoned it was probably because she's sleepy, and surely not happy that her maiden got home so late.

Slowly, Laika walked inside and saw Donna standing near the window, wearing one of her shorter silk nightdresses which made her pale thighs be the center of Laika's attention.

"Hey."

The maiden smiled and made her way to her lover, wrapping both arms around her waist from behind and pressing a featherlight kiss on the side of her head. She felt Donna stiffen in her hold for a moment, but relax soon after and lay a hand on top of Laika's one that rested securely on her lower abdomen.

"It's a little past dinner time, don't you think?"

Donna mumbled, her gaze fixated on something in front of her, probably the two birds nuzzling each other on a branch just outside the window.

Funny enough, the two little things reminded the doll maker of herself in that very moment, embraced in her lover's arms and shielded from the entire world.

Laika sighed softly and nodded, pressing another kiss down on Donna's naked shoulder, right beside the silk strap of her nightdress. It took her a little more time and a few more kisses to gather up the courage to speak.

"Yes, please forgive me. I know I promised to be back by dinner time but a lot of stuff happened and–"

"Will you tell me what happened?"

Donna interrupted, her thumb lazily caressing the maiden's hand still locked in place on her stomach. Laika closed her eyes for a moment, as if gathering all her strength, before pulling the woman closer to herself and whispering.

"I.. did something stupid."

Donna said nothing, only leaning more into the maiden's arms and tilting her head back to rest against the soft chest.

"Ada told me uh.. some serious things about Mother Miranda, how she's bringing a lot of danger upon herself and that I should do my best to stop her and I... felt emotional and vulnerable in that moment."
