"Fucking hell, this cannot be happening."
I let out a groan as I switched lanes in a hurried last minute panic. After making the big move to Utah from the city that never sleeps, I didn't imagine I would ever have to deal with the horrid idea of traffic all the while becoming a new resident of Salt Lake City. It was my first day at my new office and here I was, overslept, late and not to mention, a hot ass mess.
I had just become a junior marketing associate for a popular cosmetic company that was based out of New York City. Though the company was quite successful since I had joined them as an intern a few years prior, nearly every business across the world felt the impact of the horrid pandemic and the company found itself having to downsize, people losing their jobs left and right. Though I was fortunate enough to stay employed throughout it all, my boss had recently approached me with the idea of a transfer. The offer included a huge promotion, with the unexpected catch of moving nearly halfway across the country.
My boss almost expected me to turn the position down because though it was a dramatic increase compared to my intern pay, not many people are willing to completely pick up their life in the Big Apple, and start over from scratch in the mountains of Utah. Much to her surprise, I accepted the job without hesitation as I found myself having nothing or no one tying me down to the streets of Manhattan.
I mostly kept to myself and didn't have a whole lot of friends as my focus straight out of college was strictly to work my ass off and earn my way up the corporate ladder. I lived in a tiny two bedroom apartment with my roommate and only friend, Meghan, who was terribly heartbroken when I spilled the news to her that I was moving thousands of miles away. She eventually expressed her happiness for me after sulking around for my remaining weeks in New York.
I had flown out to Utah a few times before the move to rent out a studio apartment for myself and to scout out the downtown area of Salt Lake where I was going to be living. What I didn't do, was take a test drive from my apartment complex to my new office and to make matters worse, it stupidly slipped my mind to set my alarm the night before.
I rolled out of bed, quickly jumped into a steaming hot shower and somehow managed to throw my clothes on and bolt out the door all in fifteen minutes. A new personal record after being infamously late my entire life.
I quickly glanced up to the road as I reached over to fumble through my purse desperately looking for a hairbrush. Though I had managed to make it out the door in fifteen minutes, I nearly screamed at my appearance in the rear view mirror as my wild hair stuck up in almost every direction. I combed through my knotted waves with a few swift motions as the car behind me began to aggressively honk their horn.
"I'm going asshole relax." I muttered to myself as I rolled my eyes upwards, watching with a scowl as he stuck his hand out of the window to give me the middle finger.
I reached over once again, my hand sweeping around the packed purse to find my favorite shade of lipstick as my ring tone began to blare through my car speakers. I answered the call on my steering wheel with one hand as the other finally grasped the lipstick tube from the bottom of the bag.
"Jules! How's Utah? How is the new job?" Meghan's voice blared through the car, causing me to immediately reach for the volume, cranking it down as I squinted at her high pitched squeals.
"Meg you're way too happy for 8 o clock in the morning." I groaned, pulling down my visor to apply a light layer of the pinkish red hue.
"Have you had your coffee yet Juliana? Cause you don't sound like you have any caffeine running through your veins." I could hear her usual peppy voice frowning at me with a scowl from miles away.
