"Madison, wake up" Monse yelled from the other side of my door. Sitting up I glared towards the door before Monse opened it. "I'm going to hang out with Jasmine, we start school tomorrow and I don't wanna be alone" she rambled.
"Why are you so tired? Are you okay?" Monse asked now turning her full attention to me. "I was up late" I shrugged.
"Who was here?" She asked, coming into my room and sitting on the edge of the bed. "Huh?" I asked pulling the blanked up because it was cold in my room.
"I heard you talking with someone" she said looking at her hands than me. "Ah, Oscar stopped over last night. He made me waffles" I chuckled, smirking up at her.
"Waffles? I ate the last ones?" She questioned making me chuckle. "I know, but he made them from scratch for me" I smirked.
"You mean Spooky, leader of the Santos spooky. Came here and made you waffles. From scratch?" She asked dumbfounded.
Rolling my eyes I nodded getting out of bed and making my way towards the bathroom. "Have fun at Jasmines" I nodded and Monse turned talking out of the house.
-
"Monse" I smiled, looking up at my sister as she came into the house. "How was school?" I asked turning back to the dinner I was making.
"School, listen we need your help" Monse said taking a seat at the kitchen table. "Oscar had Cesar jumped into the gang" she started and I dropped the spoon in my hand.
"He what?" I asked my eyebrows knitted. "Cesar was jumped into the gang. Ruby is going to talk to him in the morning will you go with him? Oscar will go easy on you" she said.
Why the hell would Oscar have Cesar jumped into the gang?
"Monse, Oscar would not go easy on my." I said turning back to the food in front of me. "Yes he would, he made got pancakes from scratch damnit. Besides, men always go easier on pregnant women" she said shrugged and I rolled my eyes.
"Fine, I'll go with Ruby" I said grabbing two bowls and Monse and I sat for dinner. "Thank you."
-
Monse and I walked to Ruby's. Silently, a brown haired girl I didn't recognize was stood at the end of the driveway. "Olivia" Monse smiled, "Maddy this is Olivia, Olivia, this is my sister Maddy" Monse smiled introducing us. "It's nice to meet you Olivia, you're staying with ruby and his family right?" I questioned and she nodded.
"I'm sorry" I joked, glancing over at a pale ruby as he walked down the driveway.
"What's that supposed to mean?" He said sweat beading at his forehead. "Nothing Ruben" I chuckled turning back to the girl. "You guys have a good day at school" I smiled and motioned my head towards the Diaz house.
"Ay, Santa María" Ruby said praying while we approached the fence to the back yard. "Come on ruby" I said patting his shoulder and pushing him towards the back of the house.
He was hyperventilating as we got closer to the house. Trying to push me backwards. "Acid? I can't. I can't. I can't" he whispered shaking his head trying to turn around.
"'Sup, fools?" Oscar spike causing ruby to jump.
Ruby and I approached Oscar as he sat down to buckets. Ruby hesitantly took a seat, eyeing Oscar.
Oscar learned forward, getting closer to Cesar's face.
"What's with the glitter?" He asked, sitting back on his bucket. "Late night at the club. You know how hynas be." Ruby said nervously.
Oscar started to chuckle, taking out a pack of smokes. "I feel you home, sometimes my rica wears that same shit. She be rubbing all up on me. I can get that crap out for days." He said packing the smokes and offering one to Ruby. "Smoke?" He asked. I eyed him oddly. Really?
"Trying to quit" he said trying to act hard.
Oscar took out a smoke, "whatcha want to chop it up about?" He asked.
"Uh.. Mr. Oscar... I mean Spooky. I know you're a busy man so I'll cut right to it. Is that acid? You know what, don't answer. None of my business" he rambled nervously.
"So, cesar. I mean, can we just talk about how smart he is? You know, I'm smart, but he's like... a certifiable geniu... and he has off-the-charts emotional intelligence, which is rare." Ruby rambled.
I took this time to admire Oscar. We hadn't talked since he came over and made me waffles. I wasn't really expecting him too.
I'm not even sure why I agreed to come with ruby. I will admit, the man had changed a lot since he got locked away 4 years ago.
They always say prison changed people, but I think Oscar just realized a lot about himself. He's been in the gang life since he was 14. That's almost 10 years.
I know the gang side of spooky. Now I'm seeing the sweet side of Oscar.
"Well, vultures are more like scavengers. I was thinking hawks." Ruby said.
"Hawks can suck a dick!" Oscar yelled, casing me to jump.
"Exactly..." ruby stammered nervously. "I mean, you feelin' me. Spook. Spooky"
I rolled my eyes at the boy.
"Yeah. Mos def." He said smirking lightly. "You're opening my eyes, homes."
"That's what I do." Ruby said shrugging trying to make himself look cool. "You know. I will take that smoke." He said making me chuckle.
Oscar hands it to him and lights his own while lighting rubys. "Well it's time to give Cesar his wings."
Ruby started to choke on the cigarette which made me chuckle even more.
"You alright there?" Oscar asked taking another puff of his cigarette. Ruby nodded, choking even more.
Rolling my eyes I grabbed the cigarette from rubys hand and smashed it to the ground. Putting it out and pushing Ruby away "get to school" I said turning my attention back to Oscar.
"Why'd you come?" He asked eyeing me for a second before tuning around and going back into the shed.
"Wanted to talk to you. Monse told me you had Cesar jumped into the gang" I said rocking back and forth on my heels. "I don't need you to tell me how to raise my brother" he said coming back out of the shed with a real chair.
"Thank you" I smiled softly sitting down and placing a protective hand over my stomach. Looking back up at Oscar watched as I made soft circles around my stomach.
"I'm not here to tell you how to raise your brother. I'm here to find out why you did it. I know you have your reasons and I know you only do them because you had no choice. That's why you're the leader of the santos, because got make the right decisions at the right time" I shrugged explaining my nosiness.
"It's the only option. I wouldn't have money or wouldn't be able to take care of him if it wasn't for the Santos, they take care of their own. He needed to be protected. The santos will do that for him" Oscar admitted and I nodded.
"I understand completely why you had to. I'm not going to give you shit. I just wish there was a better option" I nodded.
"Me too, hermosa" he whispered.
