The night is full of surprises...
.
.
.
"Saaaammmm..." A raspy voice awoke her.
She opened her eyes to see Rake watching her from where he was crouched beside her.
Slowly, she got up, wiping the sweat from off her face.
As always, she had another nightmare. By now she wasn't even bothered by her stiff neck.
She kicked away the sheets that had tangled around her legs and went to get changed in the bathroom.
Once sorted out, she turned to Rake, her eyes shining.
"Once we get brekfast, you can help me train."
"Rake...train..." Rake nodded his head. "Rake help...war..."
She lifted a brow at Rake with a pout of her bottom lip.
If only she could get some detail as to what this was all about.
Crouching to Rake's height, she sighed.
"Do you know what's going on with this Zalgo guy?"
Rake looked around nervously, as if he'd get in trouble if he even spoke about Zalgo.
Huddling closer, the skinny little thing said in a lower voice, "Zalgo bad. Zalgo...wants proxies...jealous..."
"Jealous of what?"
"Faceless man..."
.
The large kitchen room was filled with killers and other beings of all kinds.
Sam was surprised that she and Rake managed to get a spot to sit on the table.
Rake shied away under the table with his plate of human flesh. His claws stabbed through the meat like a scewer, blood slid down the claws and into Rake's mouth.
Sam sighed inwardly.
"Why so depressed?" Sally asked as she joined Sam at the table. "You get to go with Jeff on a mission today, isn't that exiting?"
Sam made a face and glanced at the wide-eyed freak that sat across the table. He was arguing with Eyeless about the best way to kill.
Sally giggled. "Someone looks tired! I wonder..."
"What?" Sam turned her gaze back to the little girl.
She shook her head. "Oh, nothing! Nevermind!"
For the rest of the morning, Sam continued to think about how to go around this war and training. Pacing around the mansion, she had bumped into several people she didn't even know.
"Sam," she heard Slender call from the bottom of the stairs. "I'd like a word, if you please."
"What is it?" Sam followed him into his study.
"I want you to gather some information from some of your fellow killers when you finish the mission with Jeff," Slender went on. "Her name is Zero, you'll know her by her white hair and badger eyes."
Sam groaned. "And what if she has no information? Then what?"
"Zalgo is plotting something as well as picking up killers for his army. He's had his greedy little eyes on you for a while and I suspect that he might send some of his members to get you."
"Your point?"
"If you fight them, maybe they might give you some information. On the other hand, this might turn out...interesting."
As much as Sam wanted to shake off his last sentence, it echoed in her head.
Interesting? How could a war be interesting? Especially between to odd creatures that aren't even human.
Sam knew she had no choice, even if she refused.
Suppose she did get information, and it was bad, then what?
She shivered, she didn't want to know.
"I'll try." Sam muttered before leaving the office.
For now she'll just have to endure everything.
.
It was dark by the time Sam jumped out of her window and climbed down a nearby tree.
Jeff was waiting on the steps of the mansion, juggling his knives with a bored expression on his pale face.
He looked up at the sound of her landing lightly on the grass beside him.
"About time you turned up, I waited two minutes for you to get your ass out of that hovel of yours!" Jeff eyed Sam with his unblinking eyes and pouted his lip.
"No shoes?"
Sam rolled her eyes at him. She had no shoes, so she was acustomed to walking around with bandages to give her bare feet some character.
"Let's just go already!"
"Whatever you say!"
