June 1915
Why in the world must this happen now?Percy was trying to draw something, perhaps trench live, while some war documenters was taking some pictures and videos.
A pretty good day. There is no attack or barrages.
Wait, was.
Shells started raining down.
Percy's painting is ruined, the camera used by the documenters had fallen into the mud. All because the Germans decided to do a barrage now.
Shells that fell shocked the soldiers. They thought of it as an attack, so they took their arms and prepared to fight.
Oh well, would you look at that.
Across the No-Mans-Land, the Germans are opening some canisters. And they are wearing some sort of masks. Wait a minute. It's mustard gas!
A gas attack. "Gas attack!" Percy shouted. Everyone started looking for their gas masks. Most of them had found it, but some seemed to have lost it.
Percy pitied them who had lost it, until he realized that he hadn't found his gas mask.
Shit.
He realized that he could use cloth, so he took some cloth. Before he could wear the cloth, a private gave him a gas mask. "I think it is yours, sergeant. Found it by the machinegun nest," the private said. Percy then said thanks, and wore it.
Just in time. The gas reached their position. Yellow smoke covered the trench, somebody who lost their gas mask fell, their chests bloodied. Surely dead, Percy thought.
A few minutes passed. The Germans must've thought everybody had died because the stream of gas stopped. Percy looked over the parapet and saw the Germans closing the gas canisters. Wind cleared the yellow gas. The gas attack had stopped, but here comes men.
"Germans!" Percy shouted. Everybody took their weapons, still not taking off the gas mask incase some of the gasses are still there.
Everyone lined by the parapet. They gazed across the no-mans-land. Then they sighted Germans jumping over sandbags and started marching towards the Entente position.
Well, that is a lot of Germans.
"Fix Bayonet!" Commander shouted. Percy got his bayonet out and armed his rifle with it. All their bayonets had specks of celestial bronze. The mortals thought it is just some mixed ingredients. A good excuse, Percy thought.
"Present arms!" Commander Hedge shouted.
All the Germans started entering firing range.
"Aim!" Hedge said.
More Germans came in range.
"Fire!" Commander shouted.
Shots fired. Rifles fired at the same time. Bullets rained down upon the Germans. Machinegunners killed many, but more got killed in the wave of bullets.
The Germans were caught of guard. They were expecting a batallion of men, poisoned and already dying, but they were welcomed by a batallion of men with rifles and bayonets ready, as well as bullets.
No German managed to reach the trench. Some who survived tried -tried- to ran back to their trenches, but got shot by machinegunner. This is not a battle. This is a massacre.
"Men! Counter-attack!" Commander shouted.
They all jumped out of the trench and started charging at the German trench.
A scary sight, seeing men charging at you.
I decided to postpone some deaths. Sorry for taking so long updating this. This one is quite short. But soon, this story will merge to the PJO and HOO series. As planned. So, see you next chapter.
