Life After Champion

June

   I wake up startled as I hear a door slamming shut and I'm thrown onto a hard floor.  My head is throbbing as I try to figure out what's going on.

   Mission.

   Day.

   Bomb.

   I sit up abruptly as the sound of an engine picks up and the ground starts to move.

   I desperately turn around to the back doors of the car. There's a window. I crawl over to it and peer out. Day is running fiercely behind us, trying to catch up.

   I bang on the window. He looks at me, terrified. He mouths what seems to be words of reassurance, but we both know this is going to end badly. And really quick.

   I continue to smack and claw at the window, while trying to simultaneously open the goddy door.

   “Day! Hurry! Please!" my normally calm voice becomes panicked. “Day!" I continue to plead. He's fairly close now, but close isn't good enough.

   “Da-"

   My words are lost as a cloth covers my mouth and Day's eyes fill with horror and he screams my name. As I breathe in the chemicals, the world starts to swim before me as I fall back slowly drifting away. The last thing I hear before I lose consciousness is the sound of a gun going off.
