Life After Champion

Day

   “We have to find her. But how?" I'm pacing around the room while Anden stares blankly at the wall behind me. “You obviously can't go, Anden, but then what? We don't have any clue where-"

   “I'll go," He whispers.

   I stop dead in my tracks.

   “Anden, I won't let you."

   “I'm going." His voice is firm.

   Is he crazy!?

   “They'll kill you! And probably June too! Don't you see! It's all a trick!"

   He continues to insist.“We'll put a tracker in my wrist. I'll have my soldiers watch me. They'll bring me right to them Day. To June." He pauses. “Then you can come get me. You'll come rescue me and her. But we have to try. She's not going to die because of me."

   "And if they kill you on the spot?"

   “It's worth trying, don't you think?"

   “Not if it costs you your life! You're the Elector! And you can't lead if you're dead! The people need you!"

   “Well do you have any genius ideas of your own then, Day!" He snaps.

   I open my mouth, but no sound comes out. I sigh. “No, but-"

   “So it's set then. I'm going."

   I think about it for a moment.

   “I'll go too then."

   He gawks at me.

   “No, Day. You won't."

   “Yes. I will. I'll hide in the shadows, make sure everything goes as planned."

   “You heard their demands. They said go alone or she dies. We can't risk it."

   “Anden, trust me." I grin a little. “Hiding is my specialty. They'll never find me. But you could use a little back up if something goes wrong, which it very well might."

   He seems to consider the offer.  Comparing the pros against the cons.  After a few seconds he seems to have made his decision.“Fine," He decides, then starts to walk out of the room. “I'll tell the others the plan. It'll take some time, but I'll get them to agree to it."

   He stops at the door and turns to face me. “Day?"

   “Yeah?"

   A sad smile plays at the edges of his lips.“Just don't let them kill me on the spot."
