We were picked up by a driver - a grumpy one at that. We were taken to the spa just like the past 2 years, they plucked every hair, waxed every spot and washed us in neutral scents. The beasts had a strong sense of smell I had heard and they were not fond of body wash with any kind of scent.

After what felt like hours I was finally finished, my body as smooth as a baby, my hair curled to perfection and my make up done natural. Even the beasts didn't like much makeup. I simply wore black eyeliner and a lip balm of course made of natural ingredients. "My my." I heard the woman say looking at her finished work. "You would be a great gift." She hummed before walking to the next girl.

I scrunched my face up 'a great gift' I'd rather fucking die.

I got up walking out of the spa looking to find my sister Prim, I found her looking at the fountain in the courtyard. "It's about time." She said before standing up from her sitting position and walking in front me following behind. I huffed that my sister didn't have much patiences. She was a strong independent woman who only had 1 year left, before she was free from being his gift. I was jealous that after this last one she would be free. I still had 2 years left of this shit, I wanted to be free to go and continue my studies in medicine.

"Come on, we're going to be late." I heard Prim say. I looked up to see she was miles in front of me. I huffed and picked up my pace, eventually walking alongside her and she sighed "It's going to be fine." She said rather to herself than me.

Prim had a secret, a one that could get her killed, she wasn't pure and if she was ever chosen. I gulped not thinking about what would happen to her. She didn't know that I knew but I had seen her around a particular boy. It was against the law for any kind of relationship to happen not until after your 20th birthday the last year you could be presented as a gift. I knew that's why she was scared, I grabbed her hand giving it a small squeeze for reassurance. She looked down and smiled before walking into the crowd of girls.

We stood in a line waiting to get to the front. Faster than I expected I was standing in front of a boy no older than me "Name." He said with a bored face. He was quite handsome, a stubble lining his jaw, longish brown hair, bright blue eyes.

"NAME?" He shouted at me and I jumped back leaning into the girl behind me who gave me a dirty look.

"Oh erm .. Esme Walker." I stated.

"Date of birth?" He said looking at me more.

"22/06/1996" I said replying quickly this time -lord knows he didn't have manners.

He stamped a card before handing it to me, "Have a good day Esme." He said smirking at me and I shivered. I walked away not looking back in case he was looking at me. I had to stand with my age which meant that I couldn't stand with my sister Prim. My nerves were getting the best of me, I could feel my hands shaking while keeping ahold of the card I was giving.

Looking down I noticed it had my details on, this is the card you had to hand over to the beast as soon as you arrived so they knew something about you before getting your birth file and medical records.

"Good evening everyone .." I heard the mayor say. I looked up at the stage to see the fat mayor standing looking at all the females. "As you know it is the night of the gift, we thank you for your sacrifice and all the sacrifices before you." He said looking at us all licking his lips. I looked at the floor in disgust. "You all know why we do this, it helps protect the town we live in from the beasts. In return for a gift they protect us and help keep this town running." he said proudly.

Of course he's proud, he's never been in a womens position he wouldn't know the fear of being gifted to the alpha.

"As the full moon begins to rise in 5 minuets I will pick a girl's name at random and that girl will have the honour of saving this town." he said his chest rising in pride and it made me sick - I felt sick the bile in my throat rising. I quickly swallowed and closed my eyes, steadying my heart beat. "The time has come" I heard him say looking at the full moon in the sky.

Oh yes did I mention so the fact that you get left in the north side forest isn't enough to give you a heart attack it's also in the dark. The chills I felt running down my body, a bad feeling settling in the pit of my stomach. 'It's not going to be you' I thought to myself as I watched him dip his hand into a massive bowl of everyone's names.

'There's lots of girls here, you're 1 in 400. That's a good chance to have' I kept telling myself. Everyone was quiet, not one person made a noise, you could hear a pin drop. My breathing stopped as he picked up a piece of paper and opened it up.

"This year's gift will be .." He said smiling like this was meant to be fun.

"Esme Walker." my heart stopped, my breathing stopped and time stopped.

No It couldn't be me - I must have heard wrong. Girls my age turned and looked at me, some with sympathy and some with rage as they were not chosen again. They cleared a path and I just wanted the world to swallow me up.

"Esme Walker?" He said again looking into the crowd and met my eyes before smiling.

"You have 5 minuets to say your goodbye before you have to leave." He said smiling down at me and I shook my eyes brimmed with tears. I heard feet rushing towards me and someone engulfed me with a massive cuddle. "Shh it's okay Es." I heard Prim say as she stroked my hair. The tears that were building up now were leaking down my cheeks. I was beyond scared. How do you mentally prepare yourself in 5 minutes for the unknown.
