Sitting in the forest, playing with a leaf Violet thought back to what she heard before she ran away from the house. Her mom and dad were having an argument about how she's a late bloomer. It's not like it's something that she could control.
"She isn't going to get her animal form, Ashton. Some kids don't and we have to learn to accept it."
"Mariah, you heard what the doctor said. They tested her blood and she has the gene that can bond with any shifter DNA. We need to try to get one of the other shifters to give her some blood. We're fox shifters she won't be very safe if we give her our blood. You see how they treat us. If we ask a wolf shifter at least she can protect herself."
"How are we supposed to do that? As soon as she shifts into a wolf everyone is going to have questions. At the top of the list will be is she really your child? Once they start to question that they will dig until the find out the truth. You know shifters like her are rare. What if some shifter get it in their head that they can breed more like her? That's asking for trouble, and we don't have a way to protect her."
"You're right but we need to figure out what to do. She shouldn't have to live like this."
Violet backed away from the front door and took off to the forest where she always felt at home. She ran until she found her favorite apple tree. The scent of apple blossoms always soothed her. As she sat twirling an apple blossom between her fingers she heard rustling and soft humming.
She scrambled to climb the tree to try to stay out of view because she didn't know who it was. As she peeked between branches she saw a beautiful figure bathed in moonlight. She was slowly walking and touching the many apple trees around her humming a beautiful melody.
When she was in front of the apple tree that Violet was in she tapped the trunk and said "Don't be afraid little one I'm not going to hurt you so you don't have to hide."
"I'm not supposed to talk to strangers and you're glowing lady. People that glow usually have a lot of magic so I will just take my chances and stay up here."
"Aren't you a smart one. You should also know that if the glowing means magic then you hiding behind a branch wouldn't save you if I truly wanted to hurt you."
Violet took a minute to let that sink in. Since she chose to run off into the woods alone she knew even if this person wanted to hurt her there was nothing that she could do. She eased her way down the branch and the trunk to the ground.
"Since there's nothing that I can do I'm just going to sit here because that's what I was doing before you came."
"Little one why are you sitting in the forest at night by yourself?"
"The other stupid kids picked on me again and it made mom and dad fight. I know it was because of me and I don't know if I want to go home."
"I'm pretty sure the fight wasn't because of you, parents usually love their children and I'm sure yours do too."
Violet shrugged her shoulders and picked up an apple blossom between her fingers. " If I wasn't a late bloomer none of this would be happening."
The woman walked slowly up to Violet to kneel in front of her. "Where did you hear that?"
"I heard mom and dad say it and the kids tease me with it everyday."
"I am the Moon Goddess Elara. You can call me Goddess Elara or just Goddess."
Violet's eyes grew to the size of saucers. A Goddess, and actual Goddess was sitting in front of her. The Goddess placed her hands on the side of her face and pressed their foreheads together. They sat still like that for what seemed like forever. Just when Violet was going to interrupt she moved her head back smiling.
"I see great things in your future young Violet."
"You know my name?"
"I know more than your name Vi. Yes, that's what I'll call you. I see many good things happening because of you but there is one thing I can't get past."
"What is it?"
As the Goddess stood, she seemed to vibrate and shake. "I can't get past those horrible little ingrates for bullying you everyday. I have half a mind to erase them from existence but that wouldn't be fun or helpful."
She clapped her hands and jumped a little, "I know. Why don't I give you a present? It won't hurt....much."
Violet stood and dusted her shorts off. "What kind of present?"
"I am thinking of a wolf spirit so you can shift and make those kids regret the day they ever chased you."
