"Hayden wake up," A little voice says and I drift out of sleep to see Matt standing next to my bed.
"What's up Matt?" I ask and close my eyes again because the brightness of the sun hurts my eyes. Matt doesn't say anything and when I open them he looks like he's about to cry.
"Hey, what's wrong?" I say fully awake now and push myself into a sitting position on the side of the bed.
"I don't want you and Dad and Hal and Ben to leave tomorrow," Matt says and hastily wipes a tear from the corner of his eyes. I pull Matt into my arms and stroke his head.
"Well for starters your dad's staying here, because someone has to take care of the Second Mass," I say and Matt nods his head, but then looks at me confused.
"What about you and Hal and Ben?" Matt asks and I think about it.
"I don't think Ben's coming either, he's been through a lot. And Hal and I will be just fine okay. We'll be back the next night with everyone else," I reply and Matt looks a lot happier once he's wiped the tears away.
"Do you promise?" He asks and I nod reassuringly.
"Promise," I reply and stand up to get dressed. "How about you skip school today and come with me."
"Okay," Matt's face immediately lights up and he nods fast.
"Alright, I'll be out in a minute. Just let me get dressed," I say and Matt smiles before leaving the room so I could change. I find a pair of camo pants and a plain black singlet. When I walk out of the room Hal's walking towards Matt and I.
"Hey guys. Matt aren't you supposed to be in school?" Hal asked and I smile trying to distract Hal from Matt not being at school.
"Hey Hal. Maggie's still asleep if that's why you're here," I reply to Hal and Matt stays quiet not answering Hal's question.
"Oh right. Matt why aren't you in school?" Hal asks again and this time I step in front of Matt.
"There's no school today. You know with everything going on and everyone being busy and all, so Matt was gonna hang out with me today," I answer Hal's question hoping he'll believe my lie. He nods his head slightly in understanding as to why schools been cancelled for the day.
"Okay. I'll see you guys later," Hal replies and knocks on the door where Maggie's sleeping.
"Bye," I reply and grab Matt's hand pulling him in the direction of the mess hall. Matt and I practically run down the hallway to get out of Hal's sight before he realised there was still school. Once we were out of sight we walked normally again.
"Okay first let's grab some breakfast and then let's see what we can do to help out today," I say to Matt and he nods happily. The mess hall is pretty much empty, which is understandable, the kids and teenagers will be at school, the adults probably helping get things ready and the fighters doing sentry duty and preparing ammo for tomorrow. "Have you eaten?"
"It's always the same boring yucky oats," Matt says crinkling up his nose in distaste and I laugh at his adoreableness.
"If you wanna be a man you gotta eat your breakfast. Remember it's the most important meal of the day," I say with a smile and hand him a bowl then grab my own. When Matt and I sit down at our normal table, he looks sad again.
"What's up?" I ask and take a spoonful of the oats.
"Mum used to say that too," He replies and I must look confused because he explains futher. "'Breakfast is the most important meal of the day', I never skipped breakfast because of her."
