We arrive at the camp just as the suns about to set. Clayton greets a few men at the door. We had taken a detour off the route Clayton had told Tom and Captain Weaver to take and Hal was pretty suspicious. We didn't follow the rest of them but stood on the road and looked at the map. Clayton mentioned something about sticking to the tree line, so no mechs or skitters saw us.
As soon as we were settled in, we had some food and water. Everyone seemed pretty nice but I still had my guard up. At one point Clayton had asked if Hal and I really needed our weapons with us when we went to bed that night. I immediately tightened my grip on the gun and nodded.
The next day I watched as Clayton walked our escorts back to the road so they could go back to the second mass and help when the mechs and skitters came. Throughout the day we played soccor and fooled around. It was definitly a change from the seriousness of being on sentry duty.
There was one girl, Tessa I think her name was, she kept finding ways to touch Hal and was constantly talking to him. Hal was loving the attention though and of course he would, he was a teenage boy after all.
When it came to dinner time, we were served food and it was a lot better than the stuff we had been eating before that was for sure. There were even fresh apples and other fresh vegetables used to cook dinner. Something I found very funny was what happened when Hal finished his food.
"You're off chores because you're new here," Tessa said to Hal. She took his plate and he smiled at her while she walked back into the kitchen.
"You're off chores because you're new here," Lourdes mimicked Tessa in a high pitched voice. I tried not to laugh but a small giggle escaped and same with Jimmy. One of the girls looked at me that was from here with a scowl. I immediately stopped laughing and gave her a mean look back.
Lourdes left the table and stopped outside the dinning room to put her jacket on. I noticed she crouched down while looking at something. She looked over her shoulder at us before going upstairs to where we were sleeping.
I pushed my plate away. "Thanks, that was great," I said to Clayton, who eyed me with caution, as if I would pull my hand gun out of it's hollister and shoot him through the head.
I made me way upstairs to find Lourdes. She was sitting on a bed looking out the window.
"Hey, is something up?" I asked Lourdes who jumped to attention when she heard me.
"Uh yeah," She got up from the bed and made sure there was no one outside our doorway. "You know the kid who's parents robbed the infirmry but Clayton stopped them?"
"Yeah. What about him?" I asked her.
"I just found his backpack from the morning he came in. I checked the inside and it had his name inside it," Lourdes said careful to keep her voice a low whisper incase anyone walked into the room at that moment.
"Oh. I think it might be a good idea to tell Mike and Hal," I say to her and she nods. We wait a little while and other kids come into the room talking and laughing. Soon enough Mike comes in with Ricky.
"Hey Mike can Lourdes and I talk to you please?" I asked Mike and he nodded sitting Ricky on the bed and coming with us to an unoccupied part of the room.
Lourdes tells Mike what she saw and he immediately wants to involve Hal in the conversation. Lourdes goes downstairs to tell him and Mike and I stand out on the porch so Hal will know it's important. He's talking to Tessa and when he sees us he gives Tessa a small smile before coming upstairs to talk to us.
"That's weird don't you think?" Hal questions us once we've told him.
"I've served with this man since a week after the invasion. I trust him and believe it's just a coincidence okay. Now go to bed and get some sleep," Mike says to the three of us. We all look at each other before heading upstairs.
