James and I got dressed. He had to take me to my house to get a change of clothes and then we went to the office to meet with the police.
When we got there they were sitting on the couch in our office. "Miss Ridley, Mr. Barnes. Im glad we get to talk to you both." One of the officers says, shaking both of our hands. "Please take a seat." The other says. He did not just tell me to take a seat in my own god damn office.
James and I sat down on the other couch in the office. They took their places on the one they had been on before. "I'm sure you've noticed, five of your employees have turned up dead." One of the officers said.
James grabs my hand in his and squeezes it. This was an act. I had to look emotional and like I was devastated so they didn't suspect me. I started to tear up, I could cry on cue. "Yes. I am aware."
My voice wavers as I speak, 'emotion' building up. "When was the last time you two had seen any of them?" I shake my head, shaking away the tears.
"Take your time baby, it's okay." James whispers loud enough for them to hear and kisses my temple. "You two are together?" One of the officers asks.
"Yes we are. For almost two months now. This has all been really hard for her. She's known them all for years. The last time we saw any of them was about a month ago when we left early, we left them to close up and we haven't seen them since."
"Miss Ridley? Is this true?" I sniffle and wipe a tear that had fallen from my eyes. "Yes it is. Mara was like a sister to me. I just can't believe she's gone. Let alone killed. It's hard to process."
"If you guys don't mind, I think she's had enough for today, if you need anything else feel free to contact us, but it's all too fresh for her right now. I should take her home."
"Yea that's all we need right now. We'll be contacting you two if we have any other questions. And you two live together?" James stands up and so do I. He puts his arm around me firmly.
"We do. We just moved in together. She still has her estate. We're still trying to get it on the market." James answers for both of us. I was shocked. But I couldn't question him or they'd get suspicious.
"Okay we'll you two have a nice evening. Miss Ridley I'm sorry for your loss's. From what I've heard they were all incredible people." I nod and whisper a silent thank you as they leave.
Once they're out the door I close it. "James." I simply say and look at him like I'm going to kill him. "I know. Let's go home okay? We can talk about it there."
I understood why he was still talking as if they were in the room. They were in the office alone for god knows how long. They could've planted a bug. Which meant we had to watch what we said in there, or we could give ourselves away.
