Chapter 10 - Meeting

Are we even allowed to have 5 man squads? I thought to myself indignantly as I walked to the designated training field. I mean, first it was Team Seven, and now Team Ten? This is just plain weird. And really, team 10? Ino-Shika-Chō? I can’t figure out heads or tails of what Hokage-sama is thinking, unless, he’s onto me. Does he know? I sweatdropped. How would it be possible for him to know, unless he found my diary, which no one would find. We all have morals, and one of them included not to hunt through dead clan compounds.

I sat down on the grass, twiddling my thumbs. I was a half hour early, but I prefered here over my dingy little apartment. I was certainly going to ask the Hokage to put me on a normal genin squad for once, one with three other members. I found myself faintly worried on how Ino would react. If she was anything like Sakura, then it would be easy to show I wasn’t, well, me. I wouldn’t delude myself into thinking that she was Sakura, however. For all I know, she may never change.

I rubbed my fingers onto my temples, thoroughly stressed out,  when Asuma popped out of nowhere.

I let loose an eep before throwing a kunai at him, taking a hilarious amount of time to remember it was Asuma, my new sensei. He sidestepped it, of course, and seemed amused.

“I’m so sorry sensei! I didn’t realize it was you!” I said, blushing tomato red. The steam coming of off me was quite palpable, as I was extremely embarrassed.

“I didn’t realize that students were supposed to attack their senseis. I guess you guys have to keep us on our toes somehow. I’d prefer that you don’t do that again, because I like having all my limbs,” he drawled, quirking an eyebrow at me. Faint recognition sparked into his eyes, though it seemed fake, but what would a jōnin want to hide from a genin? Okay, many things, I reasoned. “Aren’t you the one who’s supposedly mute?”

I mentally slapped myself, resolving to bang my head on a tree later. Well, it wasn’t like he didn’t know already. His father must have already told him. I rolled my eyes, and told him my theory, earning a loud laugh from him.

He changed the topic. “They should be here any moment now. You nervous?”

I gave him a blank stare. “Ino’s on my team. Ino. Why would I be scared? It’s not like she’s held an everlasting grudge against me for no particular reason or anything.” Seemed like I got my sarcasm back, after Naruto and Sakura went ahead and knocked some sense into me.

He shook his head toward me, and then I remembered he was her sensei. Uh oh…

“That’s true. She is that kind of person.” I forgot how relaxed he was.

“Right…” I trailed off. Shikamaru was being pulled by Ino, holding him by his ear. Chōji, bless his soul, was walking along with them fully content eating his chips, not planning to help the muttering Shikamaru.’

Asuma rolled his eyes at the sight, and I stared. My eyes darted around, trying to find a way to escape.

“Well, if it isn’t Himitsu,” Ino sneered.

“Ino, be nice,” Asuma scolded, sounding a lot like Kurenai at that moment.

I shrugged my shoulders, and acted nonchalant. I didn’t dare to look at Shikamaru. He could figure everything out. That, would be very bad.

“Okay. I will conduct multiple teamwork exercises on all of you, so that each of you will be adaptable depending on who you get paired up with. Ino, Shikamaru, Chōji, none of you will work together as a team of three at any given point of time. The first pair is Shikamaru with Himitsu against Ino and Chōji. Good luck, and begin.”

It took a stupid amount of time for both Shikamaru and I to get out of the clearing.

“We need a plan,” I whispered.

“I know,” he said back. “Ino’s probably gonna attack you, and sad as it is, Chōji won’t be able to attack me, or he’ll pull his punches. I won’t attack him either, in any form.”

“Okay. That’s a really good assessment.” I thought a bit, twisting and turning the information he gave me. “I hope this works!” I put my fingers in the ram seal. “Shadow Clone Jutsu!” I whisper yelled. I poured in a massive amount of chakra. Shikamaru gave me an odd look before prying apart my hands.

“We need all the chakra we can get. Wasting in on a clone won’t do us any good, especially in a spar.”

“Right,” I muttered. I figured it would be a bad idea to mention I was trying to make two. “Onto plan B.”

“What a drag. What is it?” he asked, lazily.

“Do you think you could stretch your shadow out to where Ino is?”

“Yeah, but the longer we wait it out, the smaller my shadow will become.”

“Does that mean you can only use the amount of shadow around you?”

        “Yeah, and it’s so troublesome.”

“Mm. I’ll distract her then, and try to dodge Chōji. Is it okay for me to use body flicker?”

He rolled his eyes. “Just don’t over do it.”

“Yeah yeah. So, I’ll hold Ino while you knock her out, and you knock out Chōji.”

“Okay. Now… where exactly are they? Wait… no way. They’re still in the clearing, and Ino’s basically just bashing Chōji!”

        “What a drag.”

Shikamaru let out the shadow, and I jumped into action, running to the other side of the clearing through the foliage. I threw a couple blunted kunai at Ino, which she dodged by going backwards, where Shikamaru’s jutsu ensnared her. Instead of knocking her out, I decided to use shuriken to pin her to a tree, right when Shikamaru let go.

“Ugh!” she grunted. Anger was flowing through her being, and she shot a murderous glare at me, which I ignored. I secured her to the tree with a rope, and then suddenly remembered Chōji was there too. I scoped my surroundings, not finding him anywhere. Ino looked positively smug, and my heart clenched. Ino, one of my best friends, was acting like this to me. It hurt.

“Expansion Jutsu!” I heard coming from my right in the trees. I flickered before my mind could process what was happening. Leaves disappeared in my place, and appeared behind a disgruntled Chōji, who ended up driving through a tree, and knocked himself out.

Shikamaru came out of the foliage, and I turned back to Ino. A silent ‘give or get knocked out’ was passed through my glance.

Bright red, Ino clearly sputtered out, “I give.”

Asuma handed the spar to Shikamaru and I.

This is pretty boring. I miss team 7…
