Talen looked at her family, tears making it possible. No one held an ounce of regret, other than Thena. Their faces were stoic, emotionless. They were no longer family.

She walked out of the room with their voices becoming distant hums in her ears. She knew what she did was stupid. She knew she should have never showed Makkari. She knew her emotions were cruel and ruthless.

Talen entered her room. It was elegant, baby pink and gold to match her suit. She rummaged through her closet for the large duffle bag she bought from a local seamstress when she found Sabi. Through her tears, she stuffed as many clothes and sentimental items in the bag as she could. Talen could hear shouting from the others, not being able to make out any words.

Her bag was stuffed with everything she could fit in as she clasped a brass locket from Thena around her neck. She gazed at her room one last time, memories flooding her mind. Memories of sleepovers, late nights, rough times, heartbreaks, and first kisses. The tears hadn't stopped, but her cheeks had become numb to them and the neckline of her blouse was soaked.

Talen blew out the candle resting on a wooden table, flooding the room in eternal darkness, before she left for the last time. Somewhere, deep inside her stone heart, she was hoping one of them would come running after her, shouting that they made a mistake and she was still welcome.

But, no one came. Talen walked away from her family alone, without so much as a goodbye. When she exited the base, she looked up, taking in the building. A simple building held so much life, so many moments. Moments that would drown in years to come.

The sun had set long ago, allowing for the light from other houses to illuminate the dirt streets. The other houses where families were celebrating a new baby or mourning a loss. The other houses where everyone was home and they were all eating and laughing. The other houses where everyone belonged.

Talen felt jealous. Jealous of those families, jealous of her team, jealous of past her. She wished she could go back to that morning and re-do the day, never showing Makkari. She wished she could explain herself to her team, maybe they'd understand. She wished she was not weird, not different. She wished she was the same as the others. She wished she had a fake heart and a fake brain and fake bones. Bones that didn't break and a heart that didn't feel emotions.

But, alas, the universe chose her to be different. To be unique. Maybe she wouldn't see it for a while, but she was meant to have the stone. She was meant to feel those emotions, to break bones. She was meant to fall in love, be heartbroken, feel passion and jealousy. She was meant to be her.

. . .

That night, Talen slept on the steps of the base, not wanting to be out with no sun. Little did she know, Thena watched her as she slept, wishing she could wrap the girl up in her arms and protect her from anything. But Thena knew that Talen was strong. Stronger than the other Eternals, stronger than her. As much as she hated sending Talen out on her own, Thena knew she'd survive. Talen's stone is what makes her strong.
