"Passengers of Yonsei University, we've arrived at our destination. Please get down from the bus."
The driver announces. Jake quickly stands and slides his backpack on his shoulders with little to no effort and runs out.
"Yahh!!! Watch out!!!"
The bus driver yells; realizing he's about to slip and fall. Thankfully, the boy manages to grab a hold of the handle attached to the staircase and balances himself.
"Thanks!"
He shouts back and runs off at the speed of light. Unsurprisingly, he runs inside the campus to his department as fast as possible. He runs to his class and finds his girlfriend standing and talking with another guy.
"Janet!!!!"
He yells to catch her attention as he was sure that she wouldn't be able to hear him from up there; in this massive lecture gallery. Confused, worried and startled by Jake's sudden breathless screeching, she quickly turns around and looks at him with widened eyes. Panting, he signs her to come down and she does.
"What happened?!?! Are you ok?!?!?!"
She questions, panicked. Jake brings his breathing to a normal pace before responding.
"Yeah..."
He replies with a slight nod and then adds more to his words.
"I just ran here. That's why I'm panting. I need to talk to you."
"What is it?"
He looks around; scanning his eyes throughout the lecture gallery. There are at least 80-90 students roaming around. It's not a safe place to talk.
"Not here. Let's go somewhere quiet."
"Rooftop?"
"Yeah, sure! Let's go!"
The two start walking out of the lecture hall. They get inside the elevator and Jake presses the button for the rooftop. An awkward silence fills the elevator as both of them were silent. The elevator door opens; landing them right outside the rooftop. Jake lets Janet out first and then gets out. The young lady walks to the edge of the rooftop and stares at the city landscape from there. It looked.... beautiful!!!
"Hey, Jane?"
Jake calls out to her lovingly.
"I know what you'll tell me, Jake..."
"Y-you do?"
He questions, shocked! How did she know?!?!? Who told her?!?!?! What happened?!?!?
"I know we're not soulmates. I found mine yesterday at midnight. I was returning home from babysitting when I almost crashed into this guy's bike but thankfully, he stopped it in time and saved both mine and his life. He's... A singer... A famous one and right after that, we both got texts on our phones congratulating us on finding our soulmate."
She spoke in a soft tone with much affection; proud of herself to be able to find her soulmate only 2 months after turning 20. She wanted Jake to be her one and only but destiny didn't work like that. And frankly speaking, she had kind of forgotten him overnight. It's like she grew out of love overnight even though they spent a significant amount together being friends and then lovers. Jake stares at her; unable to find words to describe how he was feeling. Her eyes told him that she was not in love anymore... at least, not with him. She was daydreaming about that guy who probably appeared with a helmet. The look on her face said that she was reminiscing those moments. She was now someone else's. So much change overnight! How even? The girl he spent 2 years with... She forgot him that easily?!?! Is it really that easy to forget your boyfriend right after finding your soulmate? Tears welled up in his eyes just by thinking about the separation.
"Jake-ah, we're just not meant to be. I'm sure you'll find your other half. She's definitely better than me."
Says Janet, with a smile; not even caring how hurt Jake was and that how much he wished to hear some words more comforting than these generic ones.
"Babe?"
A deep and manly voice calls out. Surely, it was Janet's soulmate. The girl, with a huge grin turns around and so does Jake; to at least know how he looked.
"Seojun!!!!"
She squealed like a hamster, overjoyed and ran to him. Hugging him tightly, he looked at Jake.
"Seojun-ah, this is the guy I told you about. He's my friend and the guy who's a huge fan of you."
Han Seojun; the nation's heartthrob smiles and waves at Jake.
"Hi, you must be Jake! I've heard a lot about you already. Even though we met only a few hours ago, Janet just wouldn't stop talking about you. Thanks for taking care of her. I really appreciate it. Why don't you call me sometimes? We can hang out if you want."
"Thanks! I will try my best!"
"Great! Janet has my number. I hope you don't have any problem taking it from her."
"No, not at all!"
Jake responds; holding a fake smile so that he sounds polite and cordial as he really wanted to hang out with this guy. He loved him; as a musician but not as Janet's soulmate. He knew he didn't belong with her but to digest that fact, he needed some time alone and thus, he wished for them to go away.
"Great! We'll get going now, then. If you want, you can come find me at the business department building. I'm doing my BBA. Ask anyone and they'll show the class."
"I will. Thanks for the offer."
"No problem! Goodbye! Take care!"
The couple waves and gets inside the elevator. Jake too, does wave with a smile but as soon as they leave, he turns around and breaks down. Tears come rushing out from his eyes like a tidal wave. He was broken... His heart had been shattered into a thousand pieces. His whole world was falling apart. First, he got the news that he had a week worth of time to live. Now, Janet has turned out to be someone else's. What's next? Him losing his friends? Losing his friends was all that remained..... There was a bright side in this, however. At least Janet found her soulmate. At least she'll have a longer life to live. Even if not with him, it's ok. She'll be happy and that's all that matters. He was happy to see her happy. She had a life to live and Jake was happy for her because if they were soulmates, her life would've ended in the blink of an eye; something Jake had been praying for not to happen and God has heard his prayers. She has a much longer life to be living. She'll be happy with Seojun... He knows for sure that Seojun Han will treat her well... Maybe better than he ever did.
