Percy POV

An eternity of greed

An eternity of greed

An eternity of greed

The words echoed through my head. Luke was right. I never thought I would say it but he was right. Annabeth didn't deserve this. As much as I pained me to wake up to reality, I did. Annabeth was pacing at the foot of our bed.

"Annie?" I muttered groggily.

"Percy?" she asked. "What time does the Empire State Building open? When can we go?" I got up out of bed.

"11 AM. How long have you been awake?"

"I woke up two hours ago. It's five in the morning right now. I think we should go get ready."

"It won't take us six hours to get ready."

"Percy! This is our kid! We have to go now." she exclaimed.

She started pacing even faster. I couldn't help but wish things were different. I felt like a jerk for not being able to comfort her. She was my wife, I was supposed to comfort her. Yet there I was, hopeless and helpless.

"Annabeth. I swore on the River Styx that I would protect our child. I will. We just can't go now. Sit down." I said. Annabeth sighed and sat down.

"Have you thought about who we're going to tell?" she asked quietly.

"No." he muttered. "To be honest I'm not sure I want to accept it just yet."

"Sally should be the first to know." she muttered.

"How are we going to tell our friends. We haven't even told them you're pregnant." he said. Annabeth put her head on Percy shoulder.

That's how the night went. Quickly and slowly. We talked for hours about how unfair this was and then would stop talking to make sense of it all. Then at 10:30 in the morning, we were stand-in outside the Empire State Building.

Annabeth POV

10:30 AM might've been a little early but I was too distressed to care.

"Did you bring the lock pick?" Percy asked. I pulled out a bobby pin from my hair and opened the door. We walked inside to the front desk where the manager was waiting.

"Oh, hello, you're a little early. We don't open until 11." he said.

"We want to go to the 600th floor." I said.

The manager looked uneasy. "There is no such thing as the 600th floor. If you'd like a tour, you'll have to wait until 11."

"Cut the crap, we've done this before. Let us go to the 600th floor." I said again.

"Like I said ma'am, there is no such thing so if you could kindly wait outside." the manager urged for security.

Percy slammed his hand down on the desk.

"Listen, I know there's a 600th floor and frankly I'm sick of your excuses. I am Perseus Jackson, son of Poseidon, defeater of Kronos and Gaea, survivor of Tartarus. You will give me the key to the 600th floor."

The manager turned a pale white and quickly handed the key to Percy. He gave one final glare before taking the key from the manager. We walked over to the elevator and got inside.

"Don't worry, everything will be ok." Percy said. I nodded. We both knew that he was trying to stay strong, for the both of us. The silence between us was broken by the awful elevator music.
