I was terrified.

I can't go outside, I know that.

I shouldn't go outside, unless I have a deathwish.

Apparently, a deathwish is something that I have, because I grabbed a knife from my kitchen, and I ran out the front door.

The lady at the diner told me she'd be staying late tonight! She's like a mother to me, I can't let her die!

Honestly, all of the adults in the village... they're like parents to me...

The people of my village are like the family I never had.

My parents died when I was young. Too young to remember them, actually...

After that, a few people in the village took care of me, until I was old enough to take care of myself.

Which is why I don't want to lose her... I don't want to lose anyone...

...

God damn it... why did I have to be born into this world...?

As I ran through the village, I saw two corpses.

I kept running though, trying to ignore this... nervousness.

I eventually got to the diner, and threw open the door in a panic.

Then, I stopped.

Everything was in disarray, and...

There was a trail of blood... leading into the kitchen.

My grip on the knife tightened, and I slowly, slowly, walked into the kitchen.

The diner lady was dead.

And I just stood there, completely frozen.

I felt nauseous, like I was going to throw up just from looking at it, but I just couldn't look away.

And then, I was attacked as well.

Even in my shaken state, I tried fighting back, but I quickly remembered why Humanity surrendered to the Vampires rather than fighting back.

Their wounds heal much faster than ours... they can regenerate lost limbs, and... they're much stronger than us.

Using only its hand, this Vampire broke my arm completely.

Just as I was accepting the fact that I was going to die, I heard something behind me...

"Back off." A strange voice said. "That one's mine."

"Or what?" The Vampire that was attacking me asked. "What are you going to do if I-"

I watched as a hand reached forward, and then, with almost no effort, it ripped the Vampire's head off.

Blood dripped onto my face from the decapitated head.

The feeling of nausea I had before only grew as blood continued falling onto me.

Whoever had saved me walked forward, keeping a tight grip on the head.

"Sorry about the mess. You're ok, right?"

Then, he turned around, allowing me to see his face. From the blood around his mouth... the extreme strength I witnessed earlier... the fangs I can clearly see...

I could tell... he was a Vampire.

"Congratulations," he began. "I'm not going to kill you."

"You're... not...?"

"Nah. Not yet, at least." He explained. "And that's because..."

He smiled widely, showing me his bloodstained teeth, and then told me something I never expected to hear.

"I've chosen you."
