Sitting in the dark alone didn't bother me as much as it should. When a parent is hardly around it gets easier to get acquainted with being on your own, even in simpler times like breakfast. I sat at the corner of the long dining table reading through pages of a large tome about astronomy that I liked to call my morning newspaper. At least it's what I preferred to indulge in rather than 'The Daily Prophet.' It was merely a political agenda to help the Ministry of Magic.

The newspaper had no integrity and only stirred the pot to make the situation sound worse than what it was. And lately, Hogwarts and a wizarding student along with the headmaster have made the front pages. The newspaper wasn't exactly giving them a good light. The school's reputation was at stake. Certainly I couldn't wait to go back in three weeks and be at the library, here at the manor the only book shelf was in my dad's office, which he forbade me to go into.

It was ludicrous, really. I wasn't allowed into several parts of my own home with the exception of my bedroom and the dining room of course. I was basically a stranger to the Ellory Manor. Hence why I felt so eager to return to Hogwarts, my true home nine months out of the year. I couldn't be blamed for wanting out of here. It was always cold, dark, and disenchanting. I know it sounded contradictory, but there's a difference between physical darkness and the darkness of oneself. I was not okay with the physical.

The dining room was large and I felt so small in it. Especially being the only one there. The only source of heat were the candles in the center illuminating my face. Thick, velvet drapes hung down from the walls blocking out any source of light. It wasn't a chirpy place at all and to think that seven years ago there was always light in every room of the manor. I continued to take a bite from my toast and flipped over pages, trying to ignore the haunting feeling when a sharp noise behind the double doors provoked a subtle jump in my chair. I figured dad was in one of his moods again.

"This is absurd!" Cygnus Ellory shoved the double doors open and stomped his way in. I watched carefully, his explosive steps went over to the head of the table and slammed this morning's newspaper onto my tome. "Harry Potter has done it again! They've exonerated him."
