"My goodness, it is just lovely in here," Indie said, cupping a hand around her cheek as she floated into the cafe with Marley dangling on her arm. Her face lit up as she took in the scene in front of her: her beloved cafe decked out in fancy party decor. "You did a marvelous job, Stevie. Absolutely marvelous." Though the event wasn't for a few hours, they were both already dressed up. Indie had her hair down, her gray waves loosely draped on her shoulders, and a sparkly silver dress that flared out at her waist. Marley had her hair pinned back in a tight chignon and wore a long black dress.
Marley let go of Indie's arm and darted toward me, beaming with pride and excitement.
"You really outdid yourself, sweetheart," she said into my ear as she hugged me. I squeezed her little body close to me and breathed a sigh of relief. I felt the pride swell up in me.
Marley and Indie continued to twirl around the cafe, examining each detail and commenting on how lovely it was repeatedly. Donnie came into the cafe through the big double doors of the kitchen, clapping his hands and gesturing to me to come into the kitchen.
"C'mere Steves, I need a hand. Red head girl came in early so I let 'er go home but I have dishes comin' out my ass" he shouted.
"Red head girl's name is Katie." I laughed at him and hurried into the kitchen to help. It was nearing five PM. Donnie had already been there for almost 12 hours baking and getting our fares ready for the party. If I had any hope of getting out of there in time to get home and get ready, I had to hurry. I finished putting together platters of cake and dessert before finally heading home just after six.
With lightning speed, I got myself ready for my big night. Running with the classy theme, I bought myself an off the shoulder black dress with a sequined empire waist and a flared, pleated skirt. The curve of the neckline highlighted the roundness of my chest perfectly, while the flare of the skirt hid my belly and thighs enough to give me the modesty and confidence I needed. Knowing that I'd be spending the night on my feet, I wore kitten heals in a shiny black fabric.
I stared in the mirror, wishing that I had Piper around to help me get ready. She'd agreed to meet me at the party, but had a date she wanted to meet beforehand. While my hair was setting in the giant velcro rollers, I fixed up my makeup, selecting the bright red lipstick Piper had worn on Christmas Eve.
I got to the cafe and took in the scene. I really had done a great job of decorating. The room sparkled, not just from the twinkle lights, but from the gold accents around the room. Even the balloons looked classy- see through and filled with gold glitter, tied in bunches like flowers. It was perfect, and it was hard to take my eyes off of it while I got to work.
"You look far away." Marley said, startling me out of my gaze. After spending the first half of the evening handing out hors d'oeuvres and mingling with our party guests, I was taking respite behind the counter and watching the crowd silently. It was nearing 9pm, at which time Jamie would arrive to take the stage for his set until the midnight countdown. Part of me expected him to show up early to hang out with me, and I was a little disappointed that he hadn't.
Marley brushed my hair behind my ear and leaned on her elbows on the counter we were both standing at.
"I guess I am," I finally replied.
